The CARDS had a good win tonite against the Mets. Lohse got his 10th win. The big news was Mark Mulder making his first appearance in the Bigs in almost a year. He pitched relief in the 9th and looked very relaxed. No wild pitches. No pitches in the dirt. He had good command of his fast-ball(91mph) and breaking-ball. 2 bloop hits, one K, one ground out, one pop out, 0 walks. Hopefully for the next few weeks he can build on that as a reliever and then return to the starting rotation.

That's actually how Pedro Martinez pitches this year, and look at his results.

Playing TLR, I'd be mildly tempted if he can be successful in the pen, keeping Mulder there for the rest of the season. The Cards are struggling from the left side (Villone is mediocre and Flores has fallen off the planet), and the rotation is, at the moment, solid. That only figures to get better as well if Carpenter and Wainwright can return sometime soon.
It's all dependent on a lot of "ifs" though, and we all know how that goes...

It's only his first game back. I'm not saying he's going to be the savior of the team but if he can build on positive outings and get back to the starting rotation and have success, not lights out, that would be nice, I think all of us CARDS fans would be happy.

Oh yeah, I want nothing but the best for him. I'm just thinking possible scenarios for him to maximize his success. I'd be one of the first to wish for him to return to his Oakland level of success starting, but I'd also be happy if he can become a positive left hander in the 'pen. As long as he can find a way to contribute, I'm happy with him.

That's cool Chiss. I know you're a CARDS fan, and I agree w/you too. I think we posted at the same time because I was directing those comments towards Uncle Enzo's Pedro Martinez post.

All I'm saying is that when Pedro returned this year, everyone marveled at his consistent 90s velocity but now it is apparent he has little command of his pitches. His hittable stuff has led to a fair amount of cheap and hard hits.

Point taken. It's just the Mark Mulder project in St. Louis has been a let down, but yet the organization and fans haven't given up on him, though he still has to prove himself. It good to see him have a positive outing.

The Good: Ethier's sac fly in the 1st inning accounting for the Dodgers only run last night, Nomarrrrrrrrrrrrr/Furcal/Jones all starting in AAA Vegas last night (Furcal & Nomarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr maybe back before the All Star break, Jones will comeback afterwards).
The Bad: See below.
The Ugly: Stults start (5 1/3, 5 hits, 4 ER), leaving 10 men on base/the team getting 10 damn hits & only scoring 1 run, losing the first game of the series against the Astros, losing ground to the Diamondbacks (they won last night).

Wellemeyer's start was less than desirable, but it's his first start back. At least the Cubs lost as well.

The Good: Martin going 3-5 with 3 RBI's (including a 2-run homer in the first inning), Kent going 2-4 with 2 RBI's (the most important being his solo homer in the 11th inning that turned out to be the game winner for the Dodgers, Kemp going 1-4 with an RBI, Loney going 2-6 with an RBI, Saito notching his 13th save of the season, gaining ground on the Diamondbacks (they lose, Dodgers only 2.5 games out of first).
The Bad: Falkenborg/Kuo/Broxton (combining to pitch about an inning & a half) giving up a combined 5 runs to the Astros that ruined Kershaw's chances of winning his first Major League start, leaving 11 men on base.
The Ugly: Furcal having to leave his rehab assignment in Vegas due to back discomfort.
