Updated to $126,000,000, domestic. Biggest opening weekend gross of the year, already third in total gross. Impressive figures.
Not bad for a guy who's almost ready for retirement.
pfft, 12 dollar movie tickets.

The advantage of digital projection is that the quality of the image will not degrade over time. A film reel theoretically gets a little worse after each viewing, and sometimes the projectionist screws things up and you don't see the entire image. A film shot on actual film can easily be converted to a digital format, where it will retain the film quality but also look as good the 300th time it's shown as it was on the night of the premiere. I would also imagine that conversion to digital is much better for long-term archival purposes. There are hundreds of films from the silent era that are completely lost.

Saw it last night, having never seen an Indy film before. I was pretty entertained. Not a great flick, but not bad by any means. Slimy is whining to hear himself whine.

Actually, the opposite might be true. Apparently, it's much more expensive to back-up and preserve digital data over the long run that it would have been to keep a film negative in a vault.

I never said it was cheaper, I said it was better. It probably is more expensive because you have to convert one format to a different format, which means making high quality scans of every frame of film. However, digitizing the film makes for a much simpler editing process. Instead of splicing taping actual film, it's all there in front of you on the monitor to drag around as you please. Digital editing is way better than the old fashioned away, although to old timers I suppose it comes down to personal preference.
Edit: I wonder if the cost doesn't balance out in some way though. Film is more expensive to shoot on, but cheaper to store. Digital is cheaper to shoot on, but apparently more expensive to store. Maybe it evens out.

But from everything I read, the sheer expense of properly backing up all the files that you need to have to store a movie, and to make sure that data is never lost, sadly makes it possible that at some point, movies that weren't considered very important might be lost forever -- yes, same thing in the digital age than was the case with old-fashioned celluloid.

I don't know, I've got my current feature stored on two separate external drives, neither of which cost more than 100 bucks. Two copies right there. Obviously a film shot on HD will take up more space, but drives are getting cheaper all the time. If I can make copies of my ultra-low budget feature film and store them digitally I think the studios can probably manage it to some degree.
(also I think this is not really on topic for Indiana Jones anymore somehow).

Eh, no biggie. It's actually a productive off-topic discussion, so it can stay.

$6 is a matinee price? Lol! I paid $3.50.
I liked the film, though I tend to like most things and watch/read for pure enjoyment, not to critique. It has also been years since I've seen the other Indy films so I'm sure I missed things. For Indiana Jones though, I've always thought that the adventure to get to the revelation was far more important than the revelation itself. So I don't care about the alien part at the end and instead I just enjoy the fun.

Lol! Nope that was a matinee price at the big Cinemark theater in town. Though they do have special deals for college students anyways. I'm pretty sure we can see a movie at anytime for $4.50 if we show a college id.

Just got back from watching it with Jordan. I enjoyed it. Not enough to go for a second viewing, though. I'll add it to my Indy collection.
