I finally saw it last night. I had a wonderful time, really enjoyed it, and it absolutely met my expectations. In fact Mutt was a lot better than I had expected. Sure there were some ridiculous scenes (monkey-boy and the waterfall drops in particular), but all the previous 3 movies had cheesy / ridiculous scenes too, so I just sat back and enjoyed the ride.
Didn't care for Flip-Flop-Flip-Flop Mac, really. I still really don't understand why he led Spalko to the temple - he didn't need her for anything, he was just there to raid the loot from what I could tell.
I was surprised they killed off the character. I don't think that was necessary or added to the story in any way, and perhaps even diminished the tribute to Denholm Elliot (though he was all OVER the college). It's been pointed out to me that Connery was likely killed off as he would have had to be at the wedding otherwise. This is a very good point. Though they could've CGI'd him in there using old footage.
Or better yet, lost the wedding scene entirely, and have the wind blow Mutt the hat on the clifftop and have Indy snatch it back as he begins the descent. FIN.
But as I said, I loved it, those minor quibbles above are just talking points, not anything that really bothered me. And the scene where Indy is berating Marion for letting Mutt drop out of school is one of my favourite Indy moments, ever.

Spiderfan posted: I am still trying to figure out why Mac was necessary.
Mac reminds me a bit of Radiers' Satipo (and to a lesser extent Walter Donovan), someone who only thinks about money and himself. I'm don't think that Mac was completely useless, but he should have been reduced to a minor role. He should have been killed off in 5 minutes like Satipo.
gonzoforce posted: mac is the sidekick, every Indy film has one, too bad that trend had to continue, he was the worst part, in an otherwise good film.
No, Mutt is the sidekick, along with Marian. Mac is the traitor, sort of a cross between Satipo and Donovan.
Mac may be the traitor but as the traitor he hardly seems plot relevant. Like so many other things you could lift his stuff out entirely and it wouldn't make too much of a difference. And its not like he was all that interesting a character. So again I wonder why he was necessary.

Yes, I know this.
I was speculating on the likely reason they had to kill him off.

truth. for the price of a bottle of hair dye, they could have easily had him still fighting nazis.

I was surprised by the picture they used. I thought if they would have shown a picture of Connery, it would have been based what he looked like in Last Crusade, not a Hollywood stock photo of him.

To me, it looked like a photo of Henry Jones, Sr. Why should Indy have kept a photo of him where he looked exactly like in 1938?

If Sean Connery isn't in a nursing home muttering gibberish, I dont see why Henry Jones Snr would be.
Incidentally I went and visited by grandfather at his house today. He's 88. He might go on a bit, but none of what he says is gibberish either.
smh @ this ageism.

So, didn't people speculate for a long time if Kate Capshaw would make a cameo in the film? As long as they were trying to explain what happened with Marion, I thought they should reference whatever happened to Willie and Short Round. I always figured that Short Round was adopted by Willie, who learned to become a more mature and reliable person. I thought at least Short Round should be at the wedding, maybe have a scene meeting Mutt.

Yeah, it looked like some kind of production still from "Last Crusade" that might have been archived somewhere.
Nothing wrong with old pictures, though--In my living room I have a picture of my mom taken in 1973. The Joneses went from being estranged to being just . . . strange, during the Grail adventure. Maybe Indy has fond memories of that time with his dad.

If they didn't explain it in Crusade (or Raiders, set after Temple as it was ), why on earth would they feel the need to explain it 20 years later in KOCS?

Why did they want to explain Marion?
