Truth is, JP has said some insulting things in the past, so I guess I can take his remarks as offensive when they're really just discussion points. Then I say some really snide things back, causing crap like this. I've talked to him, and I'll try to keep it down, guys.

Saw this on Sunday with my dad, and we both thought it was only so-so, even though our expectations weren't that high to begin with.
There was some good stuff
Ford was great and Shia was surprisingly good. The film really captured the feel of the fifties. I liked the warehouse escape. The shot of Indy staring at the mushroom cloud was pretty damn great. Would've loved to have seen more of the Red Scare subplot. The diner sequence (loved the nod to both Raiders and The Untouchables) and ensuing motorcycle chase were fun. Ditto on the quicksand sequence. "None of them were you" is in my top fifteen favorite Indy moments. Indy snatching the hat out of Mutt's hands was a pretty nice way to end the film.
Besides the "inter dimensional beings" bull****, I didn't have a problem with the aliens
However there were also some significant flaws.
Janusz Kaminski has done some great work as a cinematographer, but I felt that his work on this film was cold and synthetic.
I never once felt that Spalko was very threatening and when she got disintegrated my reaction was "eh." Mac really didn't add anything to the film. The less that's said about Oxley, the better.
The grave yard fight and the jungle chase were well shot and competently edited, but quite frankly, neither of those sequences felt all that exciting or tense.
There was also a number of plot threads were set up only to be abandoned. For instance the film spends several minutes on Indy getting blacklisted, but we never see just how that plot is resovlved.
Finally, there were some moments that were just really, really, stupid. Indy emerging from the fridge unharmed even after said fridge was violently launched into the air by the atomic bomb detonation was stupid. Mutt being repeatedly hit in the gonads during the sword fight was stupid. The monkey sequence was stupid. Marion's stunt with the tree branch was stupid. Oxley using the skull to make the ants form a ring that was just big enough for Indy and Dovchenko to duke it out was stupid. Mac's death sequence was insultingly stupid.
Like I said I earlier, I didn't hate the film and thought that it was good to see an Indiana Jones flick on the big screen. The best part of the whole experience was when my dad said "I loved seeing the film with you, even if I thought the film itself wasn't that good."
Same here, dad. Same here.

Maybe you just weren't paying attention.. as I said on the other forum, he was reinstated and even got promoted to Associate Dean.

What I meant was that we never find out why Indy was taken off the blacklist, which could've been handled with about a minute of dialogue.

Your entire review pretty much mirrors my opinion.
But I quote the above because that really stood out a lot for me too.

It's really not necessary. That's why Spielberg is such a superb storyteller... and with decades of experience, too. The most important thing at the end of the movie are Indy's ties to his loved ones, it's nice to see he's got his career back but it's also a non-issue.

Kaminski is a great DP, and his work in Indy 4 is first-rate. He did an amazing job of matching the look of the earlier Indy movies. If you didn't realize this yet, maybe you will when Indy 4 is on DVD and Blu-Ray and you can compare them more easily. If you really thought there was something wrong with the look of the movie, it's possible your local projectionist might be to blame. Many theaters don't even bother using enough light in their projectors, or fail to focus properly.

Noted. To be a great storyteller, you do not have to even remotely explain how problems are resolved.
"Marion, how are we going to escape from this snake pit?" cut to Indy and Marion living hapily ever after. "Hey, how did they get out of that?" "Doesn't matter. That's why Spielberg is such a superb storyteller...and with decades of experience, too.

It's uncertain whether or not he'd been blacklisted. Putting someone on a paid leave of absence sometimes buys an organization more time to determine all the facts, and that is indeed what happened in the movie. What the dean said is that he'd resigned as part of the negotiations to make sure that Indy's leave of absence wouldn't be an unpaid leave. (They explained it a little bit more in the movie). But of course by the end of the movie the Dean has been reinstated and Indy has been promoted.

i didn't like it much at all. the story was just stupid. what was the point of returning the skull? just so that the aliens could blow everything up and run away? why was the Cate Blanchett character punished for wanting to learn from the aliens? and why would the aliens not want to tell her a few things? at least she wanted to learn as opposed to Indy and the rest just wanting to run away.
this whole waste of a movie to return a skull so aliens could run away. i don't get it.
the actors were all good but the script sucked. thus the movie sucked.

I'm not sure if your questions were rhetorical or not, but I'll reply anyway . . .
Indiana Jones films have always carried the message, "Seek knowledge, but respect the fact that There Are Things That Man Was Not Meant To Know™." Not so very original, but WTH, the films are homages to old B-movies.
The story of the crystal skull is actually exactly the same as the story of the ark, only they travel in opposite directions.
Hitler wants the secrets and power of the ark, but doesn't respect the source of its power. He sends agents to go take it out of its ancient resting place, but their heads melt instead. This is because There Are Things That Man Was Not Meant To Know™. Indy and Marion survive because they respect the ark's mystery, and refuse to look when it's opened. Then the ark is effectively lost again, only this time it's modern people who hide it in a modern place.
Stalin wants the secrets and power of the crystal skull, but doesn't respect the source of its power. A modern person has hidden it in a (relatively) modern place, but Stalin sends agents to go put it back into its ancient resting place. (In this case the skull only has its full power when it's attached to the skeleton it came from.) The Stalinist takes the ark out--wait, I mean, puts the skull back--but her eyeballs explode. This is because There Are Things That Man Was Not Meant To Know™. Indy, Marion, and two other guys survive because they don't stand around like idiots, ordering an alien skull to give up all of its secrets. Then the aliens disappear in a regrettable overuse of CGI, and the mystery is sealed forever.
You can follow roughly the same formula with the Holy Grail, too, only the grail makes excessively-nosy people who are allied with dictators crumble to dust instead. Or else they fall into crevasses--whichever.
Indiana Jones is always finding amazing stuff that kills people who find it--so the stuff always ends up going right back into the Unknown somewhere. You'd think he'd learn and just not take this stuff out to begin with, but he doesn't, because that would be boring.

You can read all sorts of stuff into a lousy film, but it's still a lousy film. Spielbergo & Co can patch it up to match previous outings, but not cover over the cracks of a lousy film.
KOTCS is a lousy film.
