I'd be inclined to think that Indy decides they shouldn't look simply because it's a safe bet not to, given what might be in there. I don't think it's anything to do with respecting the contents.

Probably true, since at the end he's all mad because the bureaucrats want to hide it instead of look at it.
Still, the message of the movie is still There Are Things That Man Was Not Meant To Know™. And Stealing Stuff From God Is Bad.™ That one, too.

ophelia posted: Stalin wants the secrets and power of the crystal skull, but doesn't respect the source of its power. A modern person has hidden it in a (relatively) modern place, but Stalin sends agents to go put it back into its ancient resting place. (In this case the skull only has its full power when it's attached to the skeleton it came from.) The Stalinist takes the ark out--wait, I mean, puts the skull back--but her eyeballs explode. This is because There Are Things That Man Was Not Meant To Know™. Indy, Marion, and two other guys survive because they don't stand around like idiots, ordering an alien skull to give up all of its secrets. Then the aliens disappear in a regrettable overuse of CGI, and the mystery is sealed forever.
tbh i've forgotten the main plot lines of the previous Indy movies as i haven't seen them in years, but to me the Cate Blanchett character seemed like she was pretty much in awe of the aliens and the skull and the secrets and whatever. she didn't seem that arrogant or demanding, she seemed to show a lot of respect. i would have thought aliens, having come all the way to earth for some reason, would be appreciative of her actions. if i was an alien and had travelled to another planet i would be praising the likes of her who are not lame and scared and feeble but who seem to be admiring and wanting to have some knowledge emparted upon them.
i see what you mean about this whole 'There Are Things That Man Was Not Meant To Know™' ethos of the movies but to me that ethos is crap. man should strive to find out things, not whimper away. it's a terrible attitude to have and i think this is what i hate the most about it. plus the monkeys were lame. and why the hell couldn't the ants climb onto the vehicles? and lol at Shia turning into Tarzan. oh man that was bad.
also what the hell is the Ray Winstone character, having just seen a bunch of aliens two minutes earlier, still giving two freaking hoots about some gold chains??? YOU'VE JUST SEEN ALIENS FOR ****** SAKES. his character was pretty lame.
i just saw this the other day, btw. hence this very delayed discussion/moan.

These are questions I cannot answer.
And maybe the aliens were mad at the Spalko character because she wanted to give secrets to Stalin, and Stalin is bad, mmkay.
I dunno.
You're not the only person who's complained that she pretty much sucked as an IJ villain.

No, it's because she asked the wrong question as her reward: it was nearly identical to the Dark Phoenix storyline in the X-Men comics (the good one, not the crappy X-Men 3 movie) where Phoenix shows Mastermind the secrets of the universe and it turns him into a vegetable.
Her question for them as her reward was, IIRC: "Show me everything."
Which is a bad Wish spell voicing given life.
