Interesting. Whatever it is, given the means used this newly discovered 'object' should be outside our solar system. I thought maybe an IMBH in our galaxy, or Sagittarius A identified as a supermassive black hole, but those wouldn't really fit the bill. Could be a lot of things, but most of the interesting theories buckle under the 50 year mark and the fact that the discovery was made predominantly by Chandra. Whatever it ends up being, it'll likely be anti-climactic after a week of speculation. But still interesting of course.

I think it's most likely something along the lines of conclusive evidence of the existence of dark matter. That would be exciting, but probably only to nerds and geeks.

I would not think to call dark matter an object in the galaxy.

Well, no. But an object might exist that conclusively proves that dark matter exists. *shrugs* It's all I could come up with.

Nasa already found 'proof' of dark matter a few years ago, also through the Chandra observatory. I doubt they'd make this big a deal about an advancement in that area.

I prefer;
speculation posted: It's gotta be the socks…
GE secretly modified the construction of dryers and for the last 50 years have been able to create mini-wormholes that suck only socks to a distant point in our galaxy.
As billions and billions of socks have accumulated, they finally gained sufficient mass to create a gravitational field strong enough to attract objects as satellites.
