They're spending money collecting signatures, and then they have to actually bring a referendum--something else that will cost money. The Freedom Fries thing was done by the people running the cafeterias in DC, IIRC. It certainly was not something that came to a vote on the House or Senate Floor.
So the difference is some money vs no money. The people of San Fransisco will decide if that sum of money (whatever it is) is an acceptable cost to them.
Edit: I take it back. Our Congresspeople are stupider than I even thought. Apparently two dorks in the House actually ordered the renaming in the House Cafs after the name caught on. Ok. Some money.

No thankyou.
Remarkably, you also have the freedom to earn whatever you're willing to work for, see the best doctors in the world, and live a long and healthy life, too. But whatever.
And those that don't have the skills to get a well-paid job? Or those that can't afford university?
Edit: I don't mean to drag this into a healthcare discussion, just wondering.

Just because my "viewpoint" is different does not make it baseless. And I wasn't trying to be nationalistic. Just becasue I say that I enjoy steak more than chicken doesn't mean I don't appreciate what salmon has to offer.
Don't let the fact that some else is different ever get you down. Embrace diversity! Co-Exist!

Saying that the elected officials of San Francisco see Che Guevera as a hero and that the majority of mass atrocities are committed by "leftists" is pretty close to the realm of baselessness.

Jabba Wocky I commend you on your quality joke, however I always thought Neo-Pilgrims would have supported George W Bush due to your doctrines which advocate war.

It sounds like the petition is being circulated by a private group called the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco, are they using public money to get the signatures?

Do you have any idea how many different opportunities there are to obtain skills to get a well-paid job? To go to university? Every year, millions of dollars of scholarships in this country go unclaimed.
Look. I'm not trying to convince you to live here. My point is that the cost for the freedom to succeed is the freedom to fail. To some people, it's unacceptable to let anyone ever fail. I disagree. I value the freedoms we have. We're not perfect, but your characterization of this country was unfair and myopic.
Edit: Dani, I don't know the internal workings of San Fransisco city government operations to comment on the costs. The only thing I can say for sure is that it will cost something--between holding the referendum to actually changing the name if it passes. Again, I don't care what it costs, though, because I'm not from San Fransisco.

As for part A, admittedly this is based on an extrapolation of known personality characteristics and probabilistic statistical analysis of leftists that I have encountered who were willing to be forthright with their opinions. While I may be wrong, my opinion is not baseless. (Nonetheless, I submit that the claim also was meant as satire, i.e., an apparent exaggeration of reality for the purpose of commentary or correction.)
As for part B, I admit for the record Che Guevara, Pol Pot, Stalin, etc. (not to mention the case that can be made for viewing facism as leftist). Again, while you may disagree, also not baseless.
