This is the new thing called the KOALA BEAR SAVE. When you think a thread is about to get exploded with argument you say koala bear and post some koala bear images, and then everyone is like "eeee koala bears look!!!" and calms down and becomes happy.

Lord_Vivec posted: Patriotism is the arbitrary veneration of land over principles.
Eh, I don't know about that. A country is more than a land, it is also a culture, a shared history (if adopted in America's case), and a shared striving to make a good life. It is mutable, but it is a common bond. It's easy to lose sight of that in a melting pot, but having seen countries with a tradition that stretches back millennia, I have a feel for how powerful and worthwhile those cultural establishments can be.
Edit: Also, don't lose sight of the fact that your principles were shaped by the environment they were developed in, an environment with a distinct history.

Have you ever lived in a country where you were delegated to be second class citizens based on your ethnicity or religion? Thats how it was for my parents back in Iraq. That was before they came to America where my dad was offered the opportunity for a real education and the chance to make a fortune if he was willing to work for it which he did. This was despite the fact that his parents were illiterate farmers. This is relatively tame compared to some ppl's backgrounds...but I think its a pretty damn good reason to love a country.

Wow, that's offensive. Do you think that the rest of us think we're looking through a dishonest lens? Or are we merely of the mistaken belief that our lens honest one while yours is the only really honest one?
Talk about a lack of nuance. We all have our biases, Brian, and pretending that you don't makes you look foolish, not holy.
I can't tell if you're being serious here...
Saying that I love my country but see her through and an honest lens says nothing about other people and how they see the country. I'm not sure how you drew that out of what I said.
Anyway, I'll clarify just in case: I was saying that there are people who love the country but are blind to the faults of the country. I don't think that's an honest lens. I wasn't even talking about the people who hate the country, in fact.

Agreed J-Rod.
If you love your way of life, your culture and the principles and values on which they are based, and if you believe these things are worth preserving (even at some personal cost), then you love your country.

I would be hesitant to link any of those things that I love with the US government/constitution/culture/whatever. To me, my enjoyment of life has nothing to do with the country I'm in.
I think the sewage plant is to the same point as freedom fries--to some Americans it's a statement of pride that their president is so...poopy!

A country, or at least my view of America, is defined by her founding beliefs.
But "countries" are not limiting nor irrelevant. Because we have countries we have freedoms. If you like Communism, you can live in a communist country. If socialism or a blend there of is your thing, you have a plethera of coices as to where to live. If you dig capitalism to it's most functional level (IMO) you also have a choice.
But if there were no countries there would be no choice. You would have to hope that the one singular government ultimately responsible would be the governmental/economic type that you believe in.
And don't fool yourself into thinking that a lack of individual countries would eliminate war. It is man's nature to oppress. Oppression has always existed and it will always exist. And occationally there are men who will stand against oppression and you have war.

How do you preserve a way of life without preserving the culture that allows it and the country that protects it? The world is full of people who are ready and willing to fill the void of a culture left crumbling due to neglect.
