Sorry. I had posted a response to you before he did, so I thought that was for me. My fault.

No, I really would be happy to live in the USA. But touting it as a beacon for freedom throughout the world that people look up to is also a very close-minded view. While there are a very many positive things about the USA, it's shortcomings are viewed very differently within the system and are often unclear. From outside, the problems are much less obscure which is why foreigners tend to be critical of the USA.

I'm not saying the UK is perfect (very far from it), but I am proud of my country. And I respect Americans who can criticise their country and still love it.

Edit: Damnit Brian! I forgot what my point was halfway through this post tongue The second half I don't think is at all relevant to the first half sad

As for part A, admittedly this is based on an extrapolation of known personality characteristics and probabilistic statistical analysis of leftists that I have encountered who were willing to be forthright with their opinions.

Uh-huh.

Every leftist I know is also a fan of Mickey Mouse. What should I conclude based on this survey?

Yeah. Well that means I get to glean what I want from it. tongue

Bottom line: There are very few users on this board, and even fewer non-Americans who I think are fair to America. The posts get more and more extreme every day--to the point that there are people here who genuinely think that we are worse than Al-Qaeda (cue posts quoting that bit for truth). That kind of constant anti-American barrage coming from all sides tends to push the few of us who overall love this country but see her through an honest lens into a defensive mode. Then we're called nationalistic jerks.

There is such an absolute lack of nuance around her of late that it's getting to the point that I just don't want to be here anymore.

I fully acknowledge the lack of perfection that is the USA. But I do not believe a person or a country is defined by shortcomings, but by the efforts to overcome said shortcomings. I have a hard time believing that anyone could seriously say that the USA is not unique in the world. I value that uniqueness, and so do many people inside and outside the USA. That is not a close-minded view. The USA is not God's gift to the world, but there are many nations and people who would be worse off without the USA. Does everyone view the USA as a beacon for freedom? No, but the incredible influx of immigrants (legal and illegal) seems to indicate that at least some do. Not touting, just observing. Not bragging, just pointing out positive value.

That all being said, I am grateful for people who hold a mirror up to the faults of the USA.

I was more interested in whether or not Bumble used a t-test for his statistical analysis, or something more exotic. Also, I was wondering what he set as alpha, and some details of his sampling method.

Wow, that's offensive. Do you think that the rest of us think we're looking through a dishonest lens? Or are we merely of the mistaken belief that our lens honest one while yours is the only really honest one?
Talk about a lack of nuance. We all have our biases, Brian, and pretending that you don't makes you look foolish, not holy.

Brian, some of us find the concept of countries antiquated, limiting and pretty irrelevant in the larger scheme of things. That may just be me, but I don't really understand how anyone can or should "love their country." What is a country?

Well, there are clear reasons for the existence of nation-states. It's not like such things have ever been foreign to humans (previously tribes, kingdoms, etc.)
