Vatican: It's OK to believe in aliens
|
Believing that the universe may contain alien life does not contradict a faith in God, the Vatican's chief astronomer said in an interview published Tuesday.
1) Oh well thank goodness I have their permission now.
2) "Ok to believe" is a bit general. How about "I believe in the possibility".
3) But he said he continues to believe that "God is the creator of the universe and that we are not the result of chance."---And he calls himself an astronomer after this statement? Perhaps he was just generalizing with the "chance" thing, after all we all generalize until a thread sinks down to a semantic debate.

Why not? Natural science is not incompatible with Catholic teaching.

Actually, that article's not about "the Catholic Church," it's the opinion of one dude who was interviewed by a newspaper.
For some reason, the distinction gets lost all the time. 
To my knowledge, there is no official Catholic doctrine on aliens either way--although I guess that can sort of be taken to mean the same thing as being "allowed to believe."
Agent Scully will be most reassured.

When the Vatican makes announcements like that it only applies to Catholics, since contrary to popular opinion the Pope/Vatican does not represent all the other Christian religions.
Its nice to know that I am now allowed to believe in aliens, though I've believed in them for years so having permission now is nice.

I'll bet they're are taking this stand because someone stold some ancient texts they were hiding and are about to reveal them.
They are all about ancient astronaughts.

I think people get so tied up in religion when they are always trying to figure out what they can do and what they can't do. They miss the whole point which is to have a relationship with God. I do that too though. I always try to see what I can do, what I can think, etc. and I miss the whole point as well.

VLM goes by the belief that only atheists have the right to call themselves scientists. As a scientist/engineer in training, I have come across a lot of individuals who hold such viewpoints. However, they find that they are wrong.
