My parents have put in me an absolute fear and disgust of buying anything pre-owned. Everything they own (and what I own) are brand new. Cars, furniture, tvs, etc, etc. I even had a problem when it comes to buying pre-owned games.

However, I'm looking to cut a few costs when I get my new apartment.

I'll need a bed and possibly a washer/dryer and microwave, not to mention a living room set.

I'm obviously skeptical about buying a used bed, but Craiglist seems to have some fairly good deals on them (some have been in use for only a few months and so on).

So, in all seriousness, would any of you consider buying a used bed, washer/dryer, other furniture?

Give it the sniff test. If it smells good, buy it.

Sure. What do you think antiques are?

Any furniture item, if it seems clean enough, should be fairly re-useable.

funny you should ask. Me and my roommate could get either a brand new, never-lived-in-before apartment for $850 ($875 if we rent the washer/dryer set) or a regular pre-lived-in apartment for $800 ($825 if we rent the washer/dryer).

We're leaning towards the latter because we'd like to save money.

If it looks and smells fine, why worry about it? People upgrade their furniture all the time before their old stuff is wrecked.

Even Jello approved. tongue

The only thing I'd advise is looking online to see what signs bed bugs leave so you can try to avoid getting anything nasty.

Yeah.

I'm thinking I might get a new mattress just for hygiene purposes. But I'll probably get everything else pre-owned.

I didn't realize that getting a place was so damn expensive. I'll need thousands of dollars just to furnish it if I get everything brad new.

As long as it's in good condition, who cares if it has been used before?

The fear my mom put in me involves peoples' grimy sexual activities upon the furniture in question, dead skin tissue, blood, etc.

This is why you have an immune system. So any germs or who knows what doesn't kill you when it comes into contact with your body. Unless you have HIV or issues with your bone marrow, you ought to be fine regardless of what dastardly deeds may or may not have been done on said furniture. Blood borne diseases and parasites don't usually live too long outside of the body and dead skin is just that, dead skin. It can't harm you.

You have nothing to worry about.

All of my furniture is pre-owned. ALL OF IT.

We bought a new fridge somehow, I think.

Anyway. Don't buy used mattresses. Getting them from your family is one thing, but as a general rule, don't buy them. Bed bases, however, are win and are cheap. Couches you can get from the side of the road. Or, you know, the paper. And always try before you buy.

Things likes tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, wardrobes etc etc are the best to get. Especially when you're renting! And people are usually happy enough to deliver them for you just for taking them off your hands wink

I wonder if I'd get edited for saying "I go to furniture stores and have wet sloppy casual sex on the mattresses."

I doubt it.
