I just rented and watched The Golden Compass, and the fact that I really enjoyed the movie left me thoroughly depressed. I really would like to see the rest of this story make it into movie form now, but I understand that this is unlikely due to the film's poor box office. Now I'm wishing I had gone to see it in theaters, both to have supported the franchise and because there are certain sequences I'd imagine to be even better on the big screen.
I know it was no LotR, but it was a fine film with a positive message to boot, and it saddens me that it gets no sequels while a piece of trash like the last Narnia movie does.
Arrgh!

It was their own fault people didn't go to the theater to watch it. They should have advertised better. It looked like a crappy movie in the previews and often, that means that it's a crappy movie. Heck, half the time when the previews look good it's still a crappy movie.

I thought the previews looked quite promising, watched it in the theater on opening day, and had a great time.

In book form, perhaps. I haven't read any of the books in either series.
But that LWW movie was atrocious. The cheap-ass cartoon from the 70s is better. I get teary-eyed when cartoon Aslan 'dies', but the live-action version left me cold.
Some points:
Movie Iorek >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> movie Aslan (and I LOVE Liam Neeson!)
Movie Lyra was amazing, a spectacular performance by a young actor. All four kids in LWW were pretty terrible actors.
Nicole Kidman vs. Tilda Swinton is a tie.
But yeah, Golden Compass >>>>>> The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Because it wasn't that good? They demolished the book, for one, and it just didn't make a very good movie on screen. It was entertaining, but once was good enough for me.

I have been wanting to see this movie. I am surprised that a toyline was developed for this film, via my latest trip to ToysRUS.

I saw it in theaters, and I enjoyed it while I watched it (and gave it a good review in my school's newspaper), but I don't actively aspire to see it again.

Read the books, might be a blessing if they don't make movies from the last two, they're nearly unfilmable, but totally amazing.
