Here's a question on the whole "marriage is a religious term" thing - what about churches that allow same sex marriage? For them marriage can include man + man or woman + woman.
I'm the wrong person to ask, as I've had one of our rabbis be a lesbian for like the last decade or so and she and her partner have both (I think) had a biological child and adopted together, but there's nothing wrong with an individual religion acknowledging it. They're just in the <0.0000000000000000000000001% minority there.
Again, though, it's semantics to me. I want the government to do away with the whole concept of recognition of marriage (except as a TYPE of recognized union) in both the legal system and tax code and I want everyone -- in whatever possible family unit available -- to have the same rights, preferences, privileges and benefits and have them all recognized by all states and the federal government.

Can it be a coincidence that Jesus intends to destroy California with an earthquake and send it into the sea, when California is the very same state that allows gay people to get married, which is clearly forbidden in an obscure line of text in a two thousand year old book? It can not be a coincidence.
I'm not gay, so this doesn't really affect me but if people wish to receive tax and social related benefits of having a recognized union between two people of the same sex, then just call it a civil union and be done with it. The title of marriage should be recognized as it always has been traditionally - between a man and woman.

dp, I still don't understand why you're unwilling to change the definition of marriage because of its religious roots, when there are religions that have already done so.
ETA: I totally don't mean that in a bitchy way, I'm just trying to understand.
