Vivec, stop making posts I vaguely agree with. It's disconcerting.

Great, just in time for this to become a "hot button" issue for the fall.

The Avignon papacy was a division in the Sith Order that the Order managed to recover from. They won't be making that mistake again.
It was a smart decision to let the other Protestant orders depart. The Sith shall be able to control the Protestants through the shadows.
Darth John Paul II was a heretic Sith who decided to change the way things were run.
Now that Darth Benedict XVI is in control, the Sith shall once more rule the galaxy...and we shall have... peace.

If marriage were entirely or even mostly a religious institution, the government couldn't legislate a thing about it. 1st amendment "Congress shall make no law . . ." --> Pretty much everybody but Clarence Thomas thinks the 14th amendment applies the Bill of Rights to the states --> no state laws enshrining or forbidding religious practices.
The government regulates the civil institution of marriage. The fact that the word "marriage" also has religious connotations doesn't change the fact that the government can't regulate any of its religious elements.
So your priest, rabbi, imam, lama, or whatever can declare your same-sex marriage invalid if they want to. The political machine can't--and that goes from the guy standing in the voting booth up to whoever's holding the veto stamp.
I know that a lot of states (my own included) would really like to have the power to legislate a religious definition of marriage. I expect they'll all be shot down--sooner rather than later.
Sadly, it'll probably be the courts that have to do the shooting--just as they were with the anti-interracial-marriage laws. (Except Alabama's anti-miscegenation law. They got around to voting to remove that in 2000. Okay, and South Carolina, in 1998. SC had a whole 62% of voters supporting interracial marriage--only 128 years after skin color stopped being a criteria for full citizenship. Who says that just waiting for the voting population to come around doesn't work?!)

What she said.
ETA: Well, except that to my knowledge, my sister isn't gay.
ETA II: But if she is, that wouldn't change the way that I feel about her. I would totally love her just the same.
