Umm, as a counter point to the argument that marriage has always been religious... marriage has not always been religious. For centuries of the west's history, the majority of marriages were not at all religious.
In Europe, through the middle ages till the ~18th century most marriages were 'common' marriages, as opposed to church marriages. Only the landed had church marriages because they were a.) expensive, b.) more permanent, and c.) pretty much a business transaction/merger with dowries being the traded commodity. The 'common folk' (i.e. the vast majority) did what was convenient - throw a party and start living under the same roof till you didn't want to be under the same roof anymore.
In case you were wondering, the common wedding predate the middle ages. Perhaps our resident Romanophile could enlighten us regarding the practice of Usus marriages?
Funny thing about social constructs, they conform to the society they exist in.
Granted, it's a beautiful and cherished myth in America that marriage has been largely unchanged since Adam and Eve wandered out of the garden ~6000 years ago, so it shouldn't be surprising that the majority carry this misconception, but in this case the myth is obviously hindering our society from adapting to the realities of our age.

I personally believe that marriage is between one man and one woman. But I was always against a Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage. I'm in favor of civil unions. Where does it end? Should we allow three gay people to marry? Or one man and two women to marry?
The U.S. Supreme Court has yet to rule on same sex marriage. They can always overturn the highest state court's opinion. I doubt it if they would take the case though.
Gays have come a long way though. Before the 2003 U.S. Supreme Court decision, homosexual sex between two consenting adults even in the privacy of their own home was illegal.

At this risk of taking the thread on the route of off topicness, why exactly would either of those be so terrible if all of the people involved were adults and were happy with those situations? What business is it of anyone else? Who are they hurting?
