But Vivec, marriage is NOT just a religious term. Millions of people get married in civil ceremonies with a judge presiding over it. Are you saying all of those marriages should be renamed civil unions? If not, what's the difference if gay people get married in secular ceremonies and call it marriage too?

Exactly. The word's introduction to legality has squewed the true definition of it, and now we are are dealing with a redefined meaning.
Alright. So?

Marriage is a religious term. The government is using a religious term.
I know you don't give a **** because you hate religious people, but religious people do care.

So you think everyone who got married outside of a religion should now be told that they are not in fact in a marriage, they are in a civil union? Don't you think that is extremely offensive to all of those millions of people?
Edit: Vivec, grow up and drop it with the hating religious people stuff. It's old and nobody takes you seriously when you start spouting that nonsense off. I thought we were having a nice discussion here.

Marriage was most likely not originally a religious institution, so it's kinda weird to restrict it to religion...

No. If they want a marriage, they should go to a religious institution and get married, not some cheap copy.

It is possible for one term to have two different meanings in two different contexts(legal and religious). Also, don't presume to speak for all religious people. I'm quite religious myself, and I do not share your viewpoint.

Well, if we want to go back to what marriage originally was, it was probably more akin to buying a house (where the woman was the house), rather than anything else. I mean, really, marriage wasn't this beautiful two equal individuals starting a new life together it was a man taking possession of a female because A) he wanted to get laid regularly and B) he wanted kids.

Why does everything have to be about religion?
Not everybody believes in god... deal with it.

Lord_Vivec posted: Why is it so difficult to simply have all civil unions and then religious people can go get the sacrament of matrimony, etc?
Unless, of course, you simply want to cause religious people strife.
Explain how it causes religious people more strife than individuals who are denied equal rights under the law? Why is it so difficult to acknowledge that whatever else marriage is, it is a legal institution? Why do some people spend time worrying about and feel "strife" over two people of the same sex being married?

Well, religion invented the sacrament of marriage, and now the government uses "marriage" to mean something other than the sacrament. So, yes, you guys have made it about religion by using the term marriage.

Because "the lord" obviously wants us to hate and descriminate against eachother.
