Well, I'm bothered about the political constitutional bit, and the rest more or less about the right to call themselves married rather than 'civil union'ed. Nobody is anti-gay, bar the oddities we have.

Hey, I keep coming back because I've got AT LEAST 13 pages of "holy crap, I didn't realize things could go this right!" excitement in me.

It affects me. You won't buy me pretty things anymore if you have to twink someone else out.

Sinrebirth lots of people on and off these forums are anti-gay, as if who I sleep with somehow affects their lives.

Men who have sex with men make straight sexual experiences less special. Why can't you understand that?!

Because you've been arguing for 7 pages that he shouldn't be able to get married.

I've been arguing that, legally, it shouldn't be called marriage, it should be called civil unions. For all homosexual and heterosexual couples.
As I stated earlier, I fully supported this decision by the Court, and I do believe that homosexual couples should get the same rights as heterosexual couples.
Show's how much you've been paying attention.

I've been paying attention. I don't want to put words in Tim's mouth, but I believe he wants to some day be married, not "civilly united" or whatever you would call it.

Marriage would be the same as Civil Unions. So then it's not about the rights, it's about trying to shove it in religion's face?
Anyways, I've supported Gay marriage since I could pay attention to politics. If that's not enough for you, I don't know what is.

One of the problems with the religious argument is that there are religions that have no problem calling it marriage.

That's great for those religions.

I may regret this, but here goes.
I guess I don't understand the distinction between the term "marriage" and "civil unions" in today's society as it is used by the majority of people. It seems to me that in general those who call marriage a strictly religious term want to have their cake and eat it too. In my opinion, if we're going to go the route of calling marriage a strictly religious ceremony, then it should have no legal ramifications, as would be dictated by the separation of church and state. So in my mind, this means that a ceremony performed in a church or a synagogue by a priest/pastor or a rabbi would have no legal distinction. It doesn't change your rights to health insurance or making legal and/or medical decisions for your partners and all the other rights that come with it. On the other hand, undergoing a similar ceremony by a judge does. Instead, we have religious leaders who want to act both as their job within their religions and as judges within the American legal system. If you really want to make marriage a religious term, then it should be strictly about religion - meaning if you want the legal benefits as well, you have to also have the legal counterpart.
But as the majority of our culture today doesn't seem to see marriage as a religious term, I don't see how you can deny gays the same rights. If they want to get married in the religious sense, then they need to find a religion/church that will perform that - something I don't believe you should make those groups do. If they want to get married in a legal sense, I can't see how it's anything other than discrimination to stop them.

elly: Anyways, why do you care whether I want a distinction. Is it not enough that I want the same rights for both?
