Yet you argue over a word, that basically describes the rights of both kinds of relationships?

What The Musical Jedi said.
There are plenty of words that have lost their trademark over time. Zipper, touch tone, and escalator used to 'belong' to a singular company and defined an individual thing, but over time they've lost that power and become generic. So, yeah, AT&T still makes touch tone phones, and the fact that it's generic doesn't mean that they can't anymore, but it also means that you can't call other phones by other companies touch tone.

You still haven't answered my previous question.

Lord_Vivec posted: elly: Anyways, why do you care whether I want a distinction. Is it not enough that I want the same rights for both?
The same rights for both is a start. And for what it's worth, I appreciate the fact that you want to turn all marriages into civil unions, and instead save the word 'marriage' for people that have undergone the sacrament of marriage - at least you're consistent. But I just don't think it's quite enough. The definition of marriage has changed throughout the years, and I have no problem with it changing again.
ETA: The reason I didn't reply to it earlier is because I hadn't seen it yet

Would it be enough if I were to simply not care what it's called?
In the church, we have what's called the sanctity of marriage. I've always considered that bullcrap, but I understand why the church gets irritated over the state using the word for it's sacrament.
In the words of Bill Clinton, "I feel your pain."

I'm Catholic myself, married in the Catholic church, so understand that part of it. I just don't think that the church should have a monopoly on the word.

I'm just saying I see where they come from and, being a Catholic, I know why they get angry at the state using the word marriage.

I think this is the part where we agree to disagree.

Probably.
Let's focus not on what we disagree on, but what we agree on.
This ruling is a good step forward in social equality.

I've talked about this before, so no one will be surprised by my response.
But I believe that the state has no interest in recognizing any relationship but one man and one woman. It's the only relationship that can produce the next generation.
It's the relationship that our society is based on.
It's the relationship that is best suited for raising children.
Look, people can live however they want. But the one man/one woman relationship is simply the superior relationship. It's the one that we, as a culture, are invested in. The state has no interest in any other type of relationship.

What validation is needed?
Male/female is indeed the only relationship that will create the next generation. Do....you really need validation of this fact?

That is just so very wrong. Same sex couples can do a lot better job of raising children than heterosexual couples and no one type of relationship is inherently better than any other. I don't know a single gay couple in a 'bad' relationship. My Uncle has been in a relationship with his partner for quite some time now and afaik they're perfectly happy together. On the other hand, a family friend had her husband just walk out on her and their four children.
