To paraphrase Quix (I think), it does not take a married couple to create a child. All it takes, in the most simplest of layman's terms, is the combining of sperm and egg and an incubation time equivalent to 9 months in the womb. You can do that with sex. Everyone can have sex, technically. You can also do that with a variety of other ways and means that all come to the same conclusion - baby. This little tidbit on the different ways to make a baby is quite interesting, if basic.
What is needed to raise a child is someone, or some people, who love it, care for it and provide it with the kind of environment that allows it to grow into a happy, healthy and hopefully stable member of society. It is the person who identifies themself as the parent who raises the child, not their sexual preference

The problem, Pulsie, with using that as an argument is that most of the people who are against gay marriage/child-rearing to begin with see the family as being the core of the earthly spiritual life, and that therefore there are certain morals in play that do take into account the entire situation, including sexual preference and the method of conception. I'm not taking sides one way or the other, but that's the issue.

Not directed at anyone specifically but srsly, why are some griping about whether same sex marriages should be allowed or not?
How does that affect you personally? Who are we to tell others whom (and how) to share their lives with?

yeah i think most people understand the issues (hopefully), but they just feel/know that they are *right* and the other side is *wrong*. that's why i fear there isn't gonna be much middle ground to be had

I don't understand the legal niceties so I won't even comment on the issues Jello brought up concerning the California Supreme Court's actions on the issue, but I am happy for the LBGT breakthrough from a purely social perspective.

So to make sure I understand, the main arguments against this ruling are:
(a) it's legislating from the bench (because making sure that protected classes have all the rights that the California constitution lays out for them is an abuse of power)
(b) marriage is a religious term (ignoring the religions that define marriage differently from the way that the US currently defines it)
(c) male/female relationships are the only ones that can produce new life (as children conceived for gay couples via surrogates and sperm donors don't count)
(d) if we allow this, then we're running the risk of people wanting to marry multiple partners and siblings, so it has to be all-or-nothing (nothing not including straight marriage, of course)
What else am I missing? I know I'm missing more.
