Andalite-Bandit posted: I'm sorry, but your position on this baffles me a little bit. You think gay people shouldn't be allowed to get married just because polygamy is also illegal? You might as well say nobody can get married. I don't see how this line of thought helps anyone, all it does is maintain the status quo.
That's not quite what he's saying. He's saying something like, "Sure, I want tax breaks for people with retail jobs, but I work in food service, so I'd rather people in food service get benefits tax breaks first."
So it's kind of like, "If I can't have it, they can't have it either!"
Although, honestly, if you're gonna legalize same-sex marriage, why not polygamy?
His well-thought out reply to my post of "yup" seems to indicate my interpretation was right. But who knows.
I have absolutely no problem with polygamy. Absolutely it should be legal as well, but that has no relevance to legalizing same sex marriage. Just because polygamy is illegal doesn't mean you shouldn't try to get same-sex marriage legalized. Try for both, but there's no reason to deliberately hinder one. It makes zero sense.

I think he was just trying to be impertinent with the "yup".
Anyways, I agree with you. His reasoning makes no sense unless he's actively lobbying for polygamy and same-sex marriage.

I've agreed with Lassic two or three times myself. It's incredibly disturbing.
Besides, don't we both agree on the Statue of Liberty?

i have no intention of working to hinder same-sex marriage. i'm just not all that enthused to vehemently throw a lot of SUPPORT to something i still see as unfair.
also, i'm not male

Well everyone agrees on the statue of liberty, it's an undeniable historical incident. You might as well say we agree that there was a civil war! Surely this is true, but is it possible to not agree and retain rationality? No. Therefore I do not know if it can be counted in a count of agreements.

Okay, fair point.
Although Arlon sure seems to deny it.

i dunno i guess it's like, if you went to a restaurant with a long wait ahead of you, and you're waiting and waiting, and then some people come in after you and are seated a few minutes later while you're still waiting. it's not like you think they deserve to NOT get in at all, it's just like....hey! perhaps it is a selfish and petty way to be.

look, using him as an example, he's said before that he's looking out for his own political interests first, which makes perfect sense, and i'm not gonna say that's necessarily selfish. it's logical, that's all

I don't see how that's relevant to your viewpoint Pooja. How is it supporting your interests to not support same-sex marriage? I'm not trying to be difficult, but your views on this issue honestly make absolutely no sense to me, at all. Other reasons I've heard, the religious one or the "legislating from the bench" one I disagree with completely, but I at least understand the concept behind their reasons.

to be completely honest, one of the basic reasons i'm not *supporting* or *opposing* anything right now is, i suppose, largely the result of being disheartened with the political system as whole. i guess if i see someone do something that really makes a lot of sense for the first time, i'll jump on the bandwagon. i guess my official position on this issue, in the most basic of terms, is that i'm just waiting to see what will happen. and then at hopefully at some point, what i should or should not support or work towards will become clearer. at least i hope so, i really do.

DarthPoojaNaberrie posted: I think they can marry one of their husbands or wives and still love the rest and live happily ever after. They're not excluded from marriage because they can marry at least one of the people they love. Homosexuals can't marry anybody they love.
still, i'm inclined to not really support new laws that say some people can now marry and others can't. i think i'll hold out until someone proposes something that means any adult/s can marry any other adult/s the want. it's only fair.
however, if someone did come up with a solution that, as it was put, would make everyone "shut the hell up", i'd be quite tempted to go full-fledged with support for it.
My solution is to get rid of marriage as a civil institution entirely. If people want to file their taxes together, or claim one another as dependents, go ahead. Let 'em. If people want to live together and one of them changes their last name. Go ahead! Let 'em!
Just SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY.
Honestly, tell that to the conservatives/Republicans. They're the ones who keep bringing it up with state referendums and constitutional amendments banning gay marriage and gay rights, especially our lovely president.
