2) People can't possibly support, in any substantive way, every single global problem that is important and deserves support, or most of them, or even many of them. So being disheartened with politics is certainly one reason of many that people would eschew 'supporting' certain political causes, because in the end making a difference is difficult(read: nearly impossible) and requires dedication and optimism that the disillusioned(in this case, rightly so) just don't have.

Medical marijuana is legal in the state of California even though the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that medical marijuana is illegal. So under Federal law, a medical marijuana user can still be arrested, tried, convicted, and thrown in jail in California, even though it is legal under California's State law.

Shredder, don't be ridiculous. The status quo is that homosexuals don't have the right to marry (except of course in the states where it is legal), but at the beginning of this whole business the status quo everywhere from time immemoral was that marriage was between a man and a woman. The first people to make noise have to be the ones who want the status quo changed. That's the way it is with everything. The homosexuals are the ones who brought up the idea of homosexual marriage. Any other suggestion is dumb.
The efforts at the state level are being pushed through because the Christian right is trying to solidify what they can now. They're afraid of state supreme courts magically finding a right to form a family unit in the constitutions, so they're pushing for constitutional amendments because that's the only way they can prevent it at the state level. It's just that the national constitutional amendment has pretty much stalled.
So, again, don't be ridiculous. When there is a status quo, the people who are in favor of it aren't going to go around pushing the status quo in people's faces unless the status quo is threatened, and in this case it is. Those who threaten the status quo are the instigators.

I'm sorry, but you're the one being ridiculous. I just came across this thrad in my latest posts and didn't know that you had responded to what I said a few weeks ago. No, actually, gay people never started going to the courts to let them get married until conservatives started making laws banning them from doing so. I'm sorry, but Democrats are NEVER the ones who bring up gay marriage in the federal congress of the state congresses. It's always the Republicans bringing it up when we have more important issues to talk about. I'm not sure how the initial idea of gay marriage got started, but it sure as hell wasn't in any state legislature or congress. I believe the original laws had no requirement on who you married so homosexuals started getting married and then people got mad and went out of their way to CHANGE the laws so that they COULDN'T.
So again, you're the one being ridiculous. No one brings up gay marriage bans or any sort of legislation whatsoever in any state or federal legislature but the Republicans. So they're the ones you need to be telling to "shut the hell up" but I have a feeling you really do care about it and that line is more of a smoke screen than anything else. But that's just a hunch.
