EDIT: Dashy that's pretty much "separate but equal" all over again. Worked real well last time, didn't it?
It didn't work last time because A) It was a physical separation and B) It was never really equal, just separate. Under civil unions, gay couples would receive the same benefits as heterosexual couples but with a different title to appease the religious sect.

What I'm understanding you saying is that the voter base is apathetic which means that they vote for people who pass laws that the supreme court overturns which makes people apathetic?

Partially, there is a vicious cycle there. But the increasing use of mudslinging and jingoism has played a large part - as does the overabundance of corrupt and/or incompetent politicians. As for what began it, I'm not sure; but it's clear it has led to large-scale failures on the part of the government.

I'm not gay, so this doesn't really affect me but if people wish to receive tax and social related benefits of having a recognized union between two people of the same sex, then just call it a civil union and be done with it. The title of marriage should be recognized as it always has been traditionally - between a man and woman.
It kind of does affect you because it potentially makes you part of a nation and a system that's oppressing people and denying them certain rights based on their sexual orientation. So yeah, it affects you.

Here's a question on the whole "marriage is a religious term" thing - what about churches that allow same sex marriage? For them marriage can include man + man or woman + woman.
