Portugal could take the name Lusitania or Portus Cale if it wanted.

Besides, the formal usage of the word isn't relevant--a synonym for French is Gallic, even though Gaul described parts of Italy, Belgium, etc.

I don't want to be culturally insensitive, so how is your name pronounced? Is it "Strikethrough Dark Lady Mara"? "Dark Lady Mara Strikethrough"? "Red Strikethrough Dark Lady Mara"? "Dark Lady Mara Strikethrough Red?"? "Dark Lady Mara Red Strikethrough"?

None of those is actually my name, but I do appreciate that you're asking me the correction pronunciation instead of just creating a mega-anglicized butchered version of my family name. tongue

The strikethrough represents the sound of a guillotine cutting through her name.

Okay, here's a link with audio of both the English and Vietnamese pronunciations of Nguyen:

http://inogolo.com/pronunciation/Nguyen

The English appears to be "noo-WHEN".

The Vietnamese, which I cannot really typeset, is roughly "noo-EH-UNG".

Still, the anglicized "Win" pronunciation seems to be common enough for people to use it as a play on words:

Just Nguyen (Win), Baby!

You will 'WIN' with Suzanne Nguyen

It's funny you mention that. I had a friend in college who's name was Ai Nyguyen (first name is pronounced "eye"). She had a shirt that had "Ai Win" and I never understood it, having never heard her last name pronounced. It makes so much more sense now...

Real heroes were like the characters in that man Tolkien's story, who did what they had to even if they hated it, even if it took their own lives away from them.
