GrandAdmiralJello posted: And if it were a passive participle, then there would be no accusative there with insulam.
No, this was definitely a 1st conjugation verb, apparently made out of oppressio, although a comparable verb form does not show up in the Latin dictionary I had in high school.
I'm talking about middle school Latin, mind you. The translation was supposed to be, "The poets and the farmers are taking over the island."
Now there is a phrase that will come in handy in life, especially if it's in a dead language.

Here's my favorite line from latin 2 -
puer, postquam deiciens felem sacram de monte, verberatur.
The boy, after throwing the sacred cat down the mountain, was beaten.

Why would anyone bring this thread back?
Translate the above question into Latin.

Amusingly enough, if you were addressing two people both named Haus, then you could actually use "O HAI" in real Latin.
To comment on this and the discussion of it above...
The vocative of "Haus", were it to exist, should be "Hae"... but it has other problems besides that. However, vocative plural is identical to nominative, so it would indeed be "Hai"
Better, though, would be a single person named Haius, which is quite similar to the real "Gaius"... and the vocative of such would be "Hai". O Hai, indeed.

Vocative is dumb. Rebel against it.
