Who cares about flip flopping? I want a president who will make the right decisions under the facts available today, regardless of what his position was about them last year or even last week. Not saying Obama is that guy - just that this use of 'flip flopping' to denigrate a candidate is ridiculous.

S_A, I think the concept of "flip-flopping" doesn't really have anything to do with a situation in which a candidate says "I know my opinion was different last year, but things have changed and I learned some stuff and now I've changed my position."

Flip-flopping is more "I'm going to tell you what you want to hear, even though I said the exact opposite last week."

That may be the real concept of flip-flopping, but the pundits and opponents simply use the term as a hot button word whenever a candidate changes his mind.

Thank You. The dumbing down of American politics continues. Now it's better for a candidate or politician to knowingly stick to an outdated position rather than recalibrate based on NEW INFORMATION and leave himself open to the flip flopping charge. Rise of the Idiocracy continues.

And each party tries to catch the other with this but the GOP gets to take the lion's share of the blame as this current gimmick and it's popularity came from Karl Rove and company in the 2004 election.

Exactly.

McCain used to be against offshore drilling. But he realized that unfortunately the environment might have to temporarily take a back seat to Americans paying these high gasoline prices. It's not something that he wanted to do, but had to do. Obama on the other hand was dead set against it, even with the economy the way it is. He felt more bad for the spotted owl and caribou than the American people. Obama only changed his position on the matter when polls showed that a majority of Americans were in favor of offshore drilling.

So McCain's swap was enlightenment and Obama's swap (which it WASN'T really if anyone reads the full energy plan) is flip-flopping.

I'm glad you are not partisan or anything.

I'm not sure what happened in the last week or so to change Obama's mind about the off-shore drilling, and it does sound like he switched positions as elegantly as he could but it still looks bad for him politically.

I see McCain is still clinging to his gas tax holiday... Now there's a foolish plan that needs dropped like a bad habit.

Anyone who thinks offshore drilling will help reduce oil and gasoline prices is an-- is fooling himself.

READ.
THE.
ENERGY.
PLAN.

He supported a "limited" range of additional drilling if it could be proven to directly reduce America's dependence on foreign oil.

"Obama recently shifted his position on his opposition to off-shore drilling as well – this weekend telling reporters that he’d accept a compromise bipartisan congressional plan by the Gang of 10 that includes off-shore drilling as long as it includes a larger plan toward energy independence."

Anyone who wants a good example of pandering should listen to John McCain's speech today at Sturgis (sp?- the biker rally).
I mean, they all do it but it was pretty over the top.

Everyone guns their engines as a welcome (nice use of fuel at this time, way to make the Middle East richer) and he says, "That's the sound of freedom!"

Why is that?

I've heard on the TV and radio that it would take as much as ten years for those rigs to get working, but having spoken to people who are actually in the business, (or were) all those people said that the "ten years" estimate is ridiculous.
