It's simple, really. Even if we started drilling today demand is too great and supply is too little for it to make a significant dent... and there are too many people interested in keeping oil prices high (maybe not as high as they are now because big buyers like airlines are suffering, but "affordable" prices won't happen). And oil prices are set worldwide anyway, not domestically.

Even, if one nation uses less oil from other places it means that other nations can get at that oil instead. And oil prices are mostly a confidence game anyhow, like most commodities. It's not based on what the price of oil really is, but what people think it should be.

And those people are going to think prices should go down significantly? I wouldn't hold my breath.

No, but they'll hedge their bets against what people's perceptions of the prices are. If the prices go down and they stand still then they just lose out. It's not about making profits from high prices, but playing the markets. These people know full well that they can make gobs of money either way, and that's why prices are going down now--because they stand to make more money selling.

This is where the Strategic Reserves come into play; there's a sales method which can be used to artificially reduce oil to approx. $80 / barrel and require OPEC to come down in price as well due to market demand -- once that's done, future sales can be done and puts get in place until the offshore drilling is up to speed.
It's not 10 years.

What sales method(an actual, non-snarky question)?

If so, she just won points with me.

I'd have to say, at first pass, that this sounds like Nixon's "secret plan" for winning the war in Vietnam. Assuming this is legitimate, though, why would we do this? Shouldn't the strategic reserves be used, well, strategically rather than to be a stopgap that artificially lowers the price of oil one time, in a way that probably can't be repeated later on, when prices will be even higher and the problem more acute?
