ophelia posted: He drinks a really ridiculous amount of water these days
Oh god the flashbacks. My family noticed our beagle was drinking more than usual before he was diagnosed with kidney failure in January. We had to put him down several weeks later.
But I'm sure Indiana doesn't have the same thing, because you say he has a healthy appetite, and our beagle barely ate in his last days! I'm quite sure of this!

Actually, I took him back to the vet today. His white cell count is still too high, and he's on antibiotic #3. An X-ray showed no internal problems except arthritis in his spine, and the vet gave me some medication to help with the pain of that.
It was worth all the hassle, which was significant (X-ray a hedgehog. Just think about that for a moment. X-ray. A hedgehog.) because at least I now know one thing that was probably making him unhappy, and I have a way to treat it.
No magic answers though, and my experience is that they probably aren't going to come. Indiana will be 4 in less than a month. A wild hedgehog's lifespan is about 18 months to 2 years. The thing to do now is to keep him as comfortable and happy for as long as possible.

I've heard of pet hedgehogs that live to 8 years, but that's just insane . . . that's like a 140-year-old human. Still, I'd at least like to hang onto him another 6 months to a year, you know?
And yeah . . . I'm totally the hedgehog's slave. And his PR depertment.
The vet tech was apparently not impressed with his attitude . . . she kept saying things like, "Is he always so . . . uhhh . . . usually they just walk around, and . . . umm . . . HE'S SO HYPER!!"
I had to explain that Indiana thinks he is an action hero. What appears to be a small animal frantically fighting off all attempts at medical assistance is actually the equivalent of an archaeologist escaping from a boobytrapped Brazilian temple.
He was reminding me of the "24" season six prequel during the ride to the vet . . . "One <s>man</s> hedgehog . . . abducted and wrongfully caged . . . fighting against all odds to escape . . ."
The only difference between Jack Bauer and Indiana is that Jack Bauer is usually sucessful in his escape attempts. And he kills terrorists. And he shouts about bombs a lot.
I admit Indiana is not too good at these things.

I have not been around much lately, so I had to catch up on this thread. I am sending good thoughts in Indiana's direction!

Earlier today I was reading wikipedia articles about potato chips, and I found out that in the 80's, in the UK I think, there were "hedgehog flavored" potato chips. They didn't actually contain any hedgehog material though. Has this been discussed in here before?

He's doing so-so. He's still eating and drinking and running around, which are good things. The vet recommended exploratory surgery if I wanted to do anything else for him. His labwork is still off, and we don't have a way to know why. I'm thinking about it . . . there's the cost and the misery of the animal, plus an iffy prognosis, against the possibility that the vet could find something treatable.
I don't know that he's had any notable shenanigans of late--I've been just letting him sleep a lot, on the assumption that he needs it.
I did get this picture of Chez Indiana a while ago, though:
That look he's giving me is basically, "You *****!" I gave him one dose of this neon-pink antibiotic, which he hated. Antibiotics weren't really helping anyway, so I just didn't torment him with that one again.

Well, I wish Indiana all the best. He is my favorite hedgehog in the world, and he is the subject of Andalite-Bandit's greatest thread. He is good.
