Ophelia would you ever take Indiana The Hedgehog on a journey to your school and allow him to visit your students and thereby educate them about an interesting critter whilst simultaneously educating Indiana The Hedgehog about human children? Or do you decline to do this for fear that one of your students would eat Indiana the Hedgehog? Is it a terrible danger to bring Indiana The Hedgehog into the environment of an elementary school?

Elementary schools have been known to antagonize small animals. I think of the example of Pluto the rabbit in my Mrs. Henderson's 5th grade math class. One day the children crowded around the cage in an effort to see Pluto enjoy a bag of cracker jacks. Pluto panicked and set fire to several desks, injuring several students. In the mayhem that followed, Mrs. Henderson was trampled to death and the rabbit escaped and has not been seen since.

Indiana the Hedgehog, it is said you can see the future. What are the circumstances of my death?

How old do hedgehogs have to be before they grow into porcupines?
Where will you keep him when that happens?

Andalite: i) It is possible that hedgehogs teleport. Indiana is an African Pygmy Hedgehog, and I am a long way from Africa. He certainly didn't swim here! However, if hedgehogs do possess this ability, they are very canny about it, and do not allow outsiders to observe their activities. Utmost secrecy and highly-advanced technology are two ways in which they avoid their natural predators.

ii) I have indeed taken Indiana to school, and somewhere I have pictures documenting this. I have no idea where, however, and so far I have not felt inclined to dig for them. The human children found him very interesting. He found them less interesting, and spent most of the time curled into an unhappy ball.

iii) You ask Indiana The Hedgehog a perilous question, Andalite-Bandit. Not all knowledge was meant for man to possess. However, if you persevere in your quest for such information, I will ask Indiana The Hedgehog to give you his answer next time he's awake and feeling magnanimous.

Flare: i) This is another question that I will ask as soon as there is a convenient moment. I suspect that Indiana does not include himself in the category of "furry," however. Most of him is spiny, in fact.

ii) Neither Indiana nor I have ever had any young, so I am unable to answer this question. Actually, when I got him from the breeder, I had to sign an agreement stating that I would never breed him. The breeder professed a concern about unwanted baby hedgehogs getting handed out to people who didn't know how to take care of them. I also had to sign an agreement that I would never breed, but that had something to do with men in black suits and something called "The Project." I thought at the time they meant Cabrini-Green, but the people in full biohazard gear who show up periodically to take samples of my blood assure me that this is not the case.

JRJ: Yes, Small Animal Delinquency (SAD) is indeed one of the unfortunate results of improperly caring for classroom pets. Indiana has never been more than a visitor in a classroom, as hedgehogs are nocturnal, and become quite upset when constantly awakened by noise and jostling during the day. Some have been known to turn to drugs, prostitution, and gang affiliation. This sets a poor example for the children, and clogs the courts with needless criminal cases.

Lord_BlackAdder: I do not know the answer to this question. Careful observation of Indiana for over 3 1/2 years has failed to turn up any evidence of metamorphosis into a porcupine. If I begin to see any, I will let you know.

Ophelia how come you don't make a little Indiana Jones hat for Indiana The Hedgehog to wear?

GOA: Well, technically, anything can flip, but he couldn't and wouldn't do it voluntarily.

Andalite: That had actually never occurred to me. Mostly I think it's because Indiana's skull is not the right shape to wear a small model of a human hat.

I cannot say if his skeleton is pure crystal, BTW. He doesn't attract metal or stick to the refrigerator, so I'm guessing no.

He would have made an awesome refrigerator magnet, though.

I want to grow up and be a biologist, so after reading through this thread I enthusiastically ran off to get my Encyclopedia of Mammals. It says the distance between the anus and genitals is farther in male hedgehogs than female hedgehogs. You've had three hedgehogs, chances are one was female and one was male. Is my encyclopedia reliable? I've never had the chance to participate in peer review before and I'm excited. happy

Scummy: Yes, I've had two males and a female. Not all at once, and also I mean hedgehogs.

And by "had" I mean "lived with."

In a purely platonic, normal, pet/owner kind of . . .

nvm. sad

Umm, right. Genitals. I honestly never got a real look at the genitalia of my female hedgehog. They're furry on their bellies, and orifices are not obvious.

The genitals on a male hedgehog are actually very close to the middle of his belly--it sort of looks like an outie belly button. I'm not too sure why hedgehogs have penises where most mammals have navels, but I can only assume that it has something to do with the difficulties of copulating with something that has spines.

BF2001: I am a vegetarian, so Indiana would have to become plant matter first. I don't know when or if he plans on doing this.
