Hmm . . . hard to say. Hedgehogs don't really fight too much . . . they're more about curling up in a ball and waiting for the Bad Thing to go away.

I think maybe Tiggy-Winkle, though. She was the least tame of the three, and she was one big, mean-tempered hedgehog. tongue Then again, Indiana was in better shape physically in his prime. I'm pretty sure he could have outlasted her if he had to. So maybe I'll say Tiggy-Winkle in a short fight, Indiana in a long one. Poor Velcro was a sweetheart, but he wasn't gonna win any hedgehog fights. sad

Ophelia, I propose a Halloween compromise. Would you be willing to put Indiana in all sorts of unnatural and possibly painful positions like standing upright, and running through a Hot Wheels loop-de-loop, so that we can use Photoshop to turn the images into something vaguely resembling Sonic the Hedgehog, but probably failing even in that regard?

The customary way in some African cultures is to cover them in clay, bake them, and then break off the clay which takes the spines with it. happy

Ophelia, how did you come across hedgehogs for the first time?

Ophelia is there such a thing as a leash made for hedgehogs and if so do you take Indiana the Hedgehog on walks, as a dog owner might walk their dog? If so what do people think of this sight? Do you say "I am Ophelia and this is Indiana The Hedgehog, what what!"? Why do you say this?

J-w: I've been toying with the idea of getting a camera phone, which would allow me to stalk him, constantly trying to capture lolhedgehog moments. If I do this, you may Photoshop him all you like.

SLG: Well, I've been a vegetarian for 19 years, so I'm not sure I could digest my hedgehog even if I decided to eat him. I think I would have to smother him first, and bury him beneath a field of luscious strawberries. Then, when the fruit ripened the next year, I would eat the strawberries and thus consume organic molecules that had once been part of Indiana.

Scummy: I'm actually not sure. I know that when I was a kid, my grandmother assigned a Beatrix Potter character to all her grandchildren . . . for reasons which were never entirely clear. Anyway, I got Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, who happens to be a hedgehog. For this reason I got small hedgehog-related gifts from about the age of 5. At some point I must've heard that they had become available as pets, and I started thinking it might be neat to have one.

One day I walked into the local pet store, just to see if they had hedgehogs and how much they were, and there was a sign on the door that said, "Free hedgehog with purchase of cage." So that's how I ran out for a box of Raisin Bran one day and came home with a hedgehog.

Andalite: They make leashes for rabbits and ferrets, and you could kind of get a hedgehog in them, but the thing about hedgehogs is that they change size and shape according to their mood. A happy hedgehog is more or less like a guinea pig. An unhappy one is like a softball with spines. Since leashes must fit an animal in order to be effective, I don't think they would work very well.

I have let hedgehogs play around on the lawns of people who I know don't spray with pesticides. A hedgehog will chomp on grass and just about anything else it finds interesting, and it would be a shame to poison a perfectly good hedgehog. Usually I just follow the hedgehog around when it's outside. I have put playpens around them, though.

That's interesting, and while I don't understand your grandmother's motives Beatrix Potter is full of win so it all evens out.

What kind of hedgehog is Indiana, African-Pygmy?

Dear Ophelia,
Do hedgehogs get jealous?

My mother has a dog which hates me.
Every time I go to visit her and she dares to hug me: the dog tries to eat me.

Has Indiana ever tried to or actually eaten anyone?

Oh, and how do hedgehogs react to dragons?

I love it, Jay-Jay! I especially love the eyeballs, and the way the hat sort of sits randomly on his back somewhere when his head's not at a convenient angle. I think my favorite one is the one where he's running from the huge rock with the idol. Something about his expression is just hilarious.

Thank you! love

SLG: Well, Indy tries. tongue

Arlon: He does not, to my knowledge, watch House, but then apparently he does all kinds of things without my knowledge. shock

Scummy: Nobody really understood my grandmother. She was a bit batty. tongue And yes--an African pygmy hedgehog. That's exactly what he is.

LB a) I think so . . . I've been told never, ever to keep two of them in one cage, unless I'm trying to breed a male and a female. Even then, I'd have to separate them afterward. Hedgehogs are kind of "Don't be here in the morning when I wake up" types. They do not like to share living space or food or golden idols with duplicitous French archaeologists who relentlessly pursue them.

b) This depends on your definition of "anyone." If you are strictly asking about human beings, then no. Indy eats about 2-3 tablespoons of food a night, and I don't believe he could finish a standard-sized human being in his expected lifespan of 4-7 years. Not to mention that the human being would start to get pretty gross toward the end of that time. sick If crickets and mealworms count as "anyone" to you, then the answer is yes.

c) I am uncertain how hedgehogs react to dragons. I suspect that most of them would curl up into little balls and make angry "sniffy, sniffy, sniffy!!" noises when confronted with a dragon. This is their usual strategy for dealing with large, toothed things in general.
