I guess I'll be the one representing Thrash metal and old school Heavy metal.
Slayer, Anthrax, Metallica, Sepultura, and Megadeth
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath.
Also a big fan of banss like: Volbeat, Corrosion of Conformity, Hatebreed, Raunchy, Hatesphere, Blinded By Fear.

I must admit, I just can't listen to Metal anymore ... seems like I outgrew it. =( The only exception is Stoner Metal/Sludge Metal. I <3 Sleep, Saint Vitus, that kind of Metal, and of course Black Sabbath, which were the perfect blueprint for the entire genre.

Oh great, let the whole "real" black metal debate begin.
I mean I know it's hard to define Cradle's sound and whatnot. And I wouldn't call Dimmu "gothic". Based on what I've heard at least.
Emperor, Agathodaimon, and Ram-Zet is more what Black metal is. Early Cradle is somewhat Black Metal but these days it's Gothic metal. Dimmu Borgir meh I don't really listen to them.
Oh I would like to point out one thing about calling System of a Down and Tool metal. That's placeing them with Nu-metal bands such as Limp Bizkit. There to good to be listed there. So I have found it best to put them under HardRock. Because if you really look at it there are far more great Hardrock bands then Nu-Metal bands. Crazytown any one?
To me there is only Heavy metal from there it goes:
Black Metal, Avan-Grade Metal (off shot of Black Metal seeing as how most are really more Black Metal bands), Death Metal Melodic Death Metal, Doom Metal, Thrash Metal, Progressive Metal, Power Metal, Gothic Metal, and Symphonic Metal.
I say that becuase some of the genres make no sense or have just one band listed under them. In some cases one band gets a genre named after them. Now you can mix and match those genres up there. And really from what I have seen Viking Metal bands are Melodic Death Metal bands. Jazz metal bands are really just Progressive metal bands. Folk Metal bands are just Symphonic Metal bands or Power Metal.
Most of the genres seem to be made up more becuase of the lryics then the sound.
