In this thread help me solve the horrible dilemma.
I want to watch the show Weeds. Season 4 of Weeds is on Showtime now, having premiered last night. Me and a friend are watching it even though we haven't seen the rest of the series. This is probably a wrong choice but it is not my dilemma.
My dilemma is that I want to get the first three seasons of Weeds, but that for some unknown reason there exists only a fullscreen version of the season 1 DVD. On Blu-Ray or HD-DVD or whichever they have the proper widescreen. On DVD, only fullscreen. Seasons 2 and 3 however on DVD are in the proper format. And yes, season 1 of Weeds was shot in widescreen, of course.
My dilemma is, do I go against all of my principles and ethics, everything that I stand for, and purchase a fullscreen DVD of material that was shot in widescreen? Obviously under normal circumstances I'd die first, but Weeds looks like a really good show and there exists no widescreen edition.
The choices I can see are:
1. Buy the fullscreen DVD.
2. Wait until I have money for a Blu-Ray player. (This will either never happen or not happen for 1-3 years.)
3. Find some kind of illegal way to watch the first season of Weeds.
Now you help me solve this dilemma, and I guess also in this thread you can talk about the show Weeds itself.

If you must own the DVD's and don't want to watch them online somewhere, I would buy the fullscreen.

I watched the first 3 seasons just these past weeks and had no idea they were shot in widescreen.

never buy a fullscreen DVD under any circumstances unless it was shot in said format. no other exceptions.

Are you absolutely sure Season 1 was shot in widescreen? Or maybe the Blu-ray release was cropped to 1.78:1? I seem to recall seeing on DVDActive that the BD release of The Sting was in 1.78:1, while the original was released in 1.37:1 (remember, BD was designed to work on 16x9 displays in mind, not 4x3). Your absolute best bet is to check as many internet resources as you can, and if only a fullscreen version shows up, then assume that;s the intended ratio. Besides, how often is it you see a fullscreen and widescreen release of a TV series? My brief search indicates the only DVD version availalbe is fullscreen, so just go with that.

The Region 1 Season One DVD is only available in 4:3 pan and scan format. The Region 2 and 4 releases are in anamorphic widescreen.
Since Region 2 is PAL, you'll either have to convert to NTSC or get a region free player and deal with everyone sounding like they inhaled helium. Your choice.
EDIT: Well, Japan (R2) uses NTSC, so I guess you could import from there if you REALLY wanted the proper release.

Do you use Netflix? If so, you can watch season 1 with their "watch instantly" thingy. The quality's pretty good I think. However, I believe there might be a limit of 4 hours per month or something like that.

My suggestion as well. Rent for now, so that you can watch it, and then when you get a BluRay player, then you can buy it in widescreen.
