As long as those alternates don't mind being relegated to having only one team as their option to play on.

My question is basically at what point they take over. You said that if someone doesn't answer, your team gets a strike - so at what point do the alternates get called up, if people who disappear are counted against the team?

At the point I'm officially notified that the alternate is entering the game. Now, clearly, if someone hasn't posted for a few days and an alternate PMs me and tells me they are coming in, that'd be official enough. If a forum moderator PMs me and tells me that user x is being replaced by user y, that's official enough. But something along those lines is all I'd want.

I'd keep it simple, but that's just me. We can all get pretty byzantine about if it we want to, but that's probably not the way to go  .

So how do we manage that? Like, if a team member hasn't logged in for a few days, and they're up next, can we boot them and ask an alternate? Or is that something that you or a forum mod do?
I swear I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just trying to figure it out!

Also, if someone does get banned, is it the banning mod's responsibility to put in an alternate? Since we don't know who is banned, and mods can't tell us whether or not someone has been banned?

My goal is to have the game run as smooth as possible. And for that to happen, it needs to be as easy as possible for complete teams to participate. And so, yes, all I ask for is a little communication when an alternate needs to be used or added in. A PM from the members of the team or from the forum mod is enough to explain something like that. What I want to avoid is user x telling me that user y needs replaced, and then having user y post an answer in the thread, because saying he was being replaced was just a joke. Not that anyone would do that to me.

Totally understand that. I just want to make sure that (a) it's okay for us to kick people off our team and ask an alternate to take over for them (that we don't need a mod to okay that switch), and (b) how we can find out that a team member was banned, so that we can replace them.

The rules are Inty's, but I was thinking that it would be an individual team's decision on whether to replace someone or not. This could possibly be a long game, and we all have real lives, which sometimes take us away from the internet for long periods. (No! Yes!!) The idea behind having alternates was to give a team a recourse if one or more of their team members up and disappeared. It would be up to them what the definition of "disappeared" was.
I hadn't really thought of a set procedure for voting someone out and someone else in--I was sort of imagining more of a consensus thing. If it came down to a situation where an arbiter was needed, however, I suppose Inty and his co-host, NYCgurl, would act in that capacity.*
* Done volunteering other people for things.

Yeah, Ophi gets it ... I really, really, really just want to keep is simple.
If someone's away for a while and they tell you ahead of time, great. You let me know and we plug in your choice of replacement. If someone up and disappears, then you guys notice it, and let me know. Or, I notice it and contact the rest of the team to see if/who you want to add as a replacement. And if someone's banned, I'll be able to tell. 
I don't really want to have to lay out a structure of "you must give a good reason to both me and NYCG, and have at least two other team members back you on it, or have a moderator back you on it, and do it after three a.m. on a Saturday, or before four p.m. on a Thursday." The game should be fun, and if someone is keeping their team from having that fun, the team should be able to replace them, as long as we're not creating drama for no good reason.

I understand that, and I'm not asking for those kinds of specifics. It wasn't clear whether it was the team that pulled in alternates, or if it was you guys, which you just cleared up. For whatever reason, when I first read it, I figured you guys would be assigning the alternates, so I wanted to make sure that wasn't the case.
And as far as the banned thing, since you can tell, does that mean that if someone's banned, you'll tell us so that we can pull in a replacement?
Edit: I swear, I'm not trying to be difficult. It just comes naturally sometimes - I mean, I am Dani's sister...

If that situation happens, and I hope it doesn't, I'll work with the team/team captain on it to appoint the replacement and walk on egg shells as delicately as possible. And if I break too many egg shells, I'll upload a video to YouTube of me dancing in a purple tutu*.

And I'm not annoyed, and I hope I'm not coming off that way. I'm really tired, but I'd rather have everyone on the same page and understanding the rules than people walking in semi-blind. I mean, this forum is sending almost half the teams, after all.
