wow, I just thought this was yet another thing I have absolutely no clue about, but apparently I'm not the only one who ought to know a little about Islam but has never heard of the dog=bad thing before. Unfortunately, the only Muslims I know who had dogs might not have been very religious.
Still, sounds unusual. Wouldn't they do more against the dogs in the streets, then?

DarthLassic007 posted: Remember, they were not doing anything offensive on purpose. How the hell should that British Police force know that a picture of a dog would offend anyone? They shouldn't be held responsible to every single different culture that lives there.
I would agree that the British police shouldn't necessarily have been expected to know in advance, or even to have double-checked before launching the campaign. But I think it's perfectly reasonable for Muslims to have complained when it did turn out to be offensive, and for the police to take steps to try and fix that in the affected communities. That's how civil society works. It's certainly not worthy of all the exasperation and eye-rolling in this thread.

No, actually the way it works is that when you move to another country you try to adapt to the cultural norms of that country. If you are unable or unwilling to, move back to where you came from.
What the police need is not a diversity officer, but an assimilation officer to help people from other countries learn how to be good, culturally-integrated Brits.
The Muslim leaders in Tayside should apologize to the police for the rudeness of their fellow Muslims. Whether Islam teaches that dogs are unclean animals or not is not the point. The point is British culture doesn't teach that they are.

If the only problem - reading the article jaypee posted^^ - is that Muslims cannot touch dogs without all sorts of washing and praying shenanigans, then I must come down on the side of those who think this is ridiculous - that those who complained about the image are wrong.
If a police officer asked his dog to be friendly with a Muslim, then that would certainly qualify as offensive (because it's actively making life more difficult for someone because of their faith), but simply displaying an image is not offensive. The person (or people) who decided to be 'offended' by this picture needs to grow a thicker skin. Their faith will still be there, alive and kicking, when the picture of the dog is no more. Undamaged.
I can see how their faith might be choppy waters if they were to be touched by a dog and then can't get on and cleanse themselves satisfactorily, but thi didn't happen.
The complaint takes a belief too far - into the realm of pedantry, and IMO it is that that gets the backs of non-Muslim Brits up.

Not that I'm necessarily taking either side on this political correctness thing, but I'm wondering if Orthodox Jews would complain about a picture of a shellfish or something.

Is there anything that these people won't be offended by? Next thing we'll see from the UK Muslim community will be a declaration of jihad because Gordon Brown wore a green tie on a Tuesday.

Maybe some Marines should toss the puppy off a cliff. That will appease the Muslims.

I'll be sure to go complain about the lack of decent pork chops next time I'm in Saudi Arabia and then say it's due to a lack of cultural sensitivity on their part and how they're biased against me because I'm from Iowa.

lol @ your misuse of "jihad"
Wikipedia posted: an Islamic term, is a religious duty of Muslims. In Arabic, Jihad means "strive" or "struggle". Jihad appears frequently in the Qur'an and common usage as the idiomatic expression "striving in the way of Allah."
According to scholar John Esposito, Jihad requires Muslims to "struggle in the way of God" or "to struggle to improve one's self and/or society." Jihad is directed against Satan's inducements, aspects of one's own self, or against a visible enemy.
The four major categories of jihad that are recognized are Jihad against one's own self (Jihad al-Nafs), Jihad of the tongue (Jihad al-lisan), Jihad of the hand (Jihad al-yad), and Jihad of the sword (Jihad as-sayf).
While Jihad of the sword does mean war, it only relates to a defensive war, not an offensive war as you suggested.
