That's what the Dems said would happen under a Bush second term, and I doubt anyone here has lost any rights they had before Bush became President.

Yeah, except my rights to privacy including my right not to have my international mail opened and searched indiscriminately and my right not to have my communications surveiled indiscriminately.

It may be a little more inconvenient, but it does serve a good purpose. Getting on an airplane after 9/11 is a little more inconvenient. So I do have to take my shoes off now. But I do feel safer for it than I would without this added protection. The government wiretapping phone calls to terrorist countries is not worse than John Adams signing the Alien and Sedition Acts. Or Lincoln suspending the Writ of Habeas Corpus. Or Woodrow Wilson signing the Sedition Act of 1918. Or Franklin Delano Roosevelt ordering the forced removal and internment of hundred of thousands of Japanese, Italian, and German Americans.

Hmm, I think taking off shoes is especially idiotic, but hey, if it makes you feel safer...

Good thing that historians and the general public don't view all of those unfavorably.

I thought the Japanese were the only ones affected by that?

No. There were internment camps for German and Italian Americans as well.

No, although Germans and Italians were interred in much smaller numbers.

I don't think me being wiretapped serves a good purpose. But that's just my opinion.

Yes. So we'll just dunk people underwater, and if they float, they're terrorists!

No clue. How much nicer could one be? I'm sure they all were like the one in Hogan's Heroes compared to the ones in Nazi Germany.

I remember reading that the conditions in some of the Japanese camps were pretty awful.

Really, a blatant and tactically unnecessary gross erosion of civil rights facing resistance from institutional sources and cultural mores managed to be more livable than holding pins in state-sponsored execution centers constructed by a party of racists who had equated their targets with a source of all the evil in the universe?
Wow. I wasn't convinced, before. But I guess the Japanese who went through that should be thanking us, huh?
