I'm reading War and Peace at the moment, and I'm really liking it. One thing I like to do on long journeys is to read a book to pass the time, so I ended up sitting on the platform and on the train reading War and Peace. It occurred to me that this might be seen as somewhat pretentious. Question is, is it pretentious to read War and Peace in public, and are there other books that are definitely pretentious?

I don't know about pretentious, but I tried to read War and Peace but I couldn't. It was like a technical manual. To enjoy literature I only need to be entertained. This bored the crap out me.
I liked Twilight 100 times better!

If the reason you're reading it in public is not to let others know you're reading WAR AND PEACE...
And you're not being ostentatious about it, ie, making sure everyone gets a good look at the cover of the book so they can see the title...
No, I don't think it's particularly pretentious. It's just what you happen to be reading, whether you're on a train or in your own house.

Reading Action Comics #1 in public would be pretentious, imho.

If you were doing it intentionally to 'show off' the fact that you're reading such, it would be a bit pretentious. But unintentionally? Not at all, though I suppose one or two people might still come to that conclusion anyways. Ignore them

Try to obscure the cover a little when you read. That's what I do.

It's not pretentious. You're just reading it... It's not like you're truly interested in rubbing it in peoples face, so I don't think anyone will care really.

I spent 6 months on it and made it about a 4th of the way in. I am glad you like it but it isn't my thing.
