I wouldn't want to taint Einsturzende Neubauten with an "industrial" label . . . But Blixa Bargeld is my lord and savior and should be recommended for any experimental sound sort of needs. :P

I would consider NIN and Orgy are more rock alternative than industrial. :\ Ogre not quite industrial-y either. Man, labeling music just sucks overall. :P

edit. "sucks" as in "is difficult and challenging to me." I'm not trying to be pretentious or bitchy with that final statement of the original post, eep.

Yes experimental stuff is what I am needing.

Most NIN I know isn't industrial, although it has it's influences from it as does Orgy, which is why I threw them in.

I'd hardly call NIN mainstream alternative... not the older stuff anyway. Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, Fixed, The Downward Spiral... Those albums/ep's were "light" industrial.

But anyway....

To add to the list, KMFDM (assuming no one's mentioned them yet) and Rorschach Test are also really good. cool

Sisters Of Mercy - more old school Goth industrial but there you go.

(And I linked to the most common song of theirs - Temple of Love is good, and Vision thing is classic but it has naughty un-JCC friendly Lyrics).

Depending on your mood, I'd say try:

Bauhaus-not really industrial, but more moody. Peter Murphy's original band, and the others went on to form Love and Rockets (which was more mainstream)

Sister Machine Gun-Not really industrial again, but rather more like a "acoustic industrial," for all the strangeness that it represents.

Electric Hellfire Club-They shun the industrial label, and call themselves "electric heavy metal" instead, but it basically sounds the same. Their song, "Mr44," is one of the sources for my user name here. They also have a cool cover of John Carpenter's Halloween movie song.

Therapy-harder, more shouting than typical industrial, but most certainly fits your weird and eccentric request.

Front 242- Probably one of my all around favorite groups (the core is two guys from Belgium, but ironically, they pioneered the "German industrial music sound." I probably have 10 different versions of their song Headhunter in import, live, remake, etc.. forms.

As others have mentioned I'd also second:

KMFDM-more dance orientated, but also more "listenable."

Einsturzende Neubauten- Most certainly industrial, and considered to be the grandfathers of the genre. They have an entire CD that was created using common household objects and tools. The actual result is jumbled, but it was certainly gutsy. My favorite song of theirs is Die Interimsliebenden on their Tabula Rasa CD.

Sisters of Mercy- Breezy is right in that they're more old school Goth (before the term became interchangeable with emo) than industrial, but you can't get better 80's goth than Sisters..

I don't know how I forgot to mention Front Line Assembly, but they're pretty good too. They have a sample taken from Michael Douglas's movie Falling Down (if anyone remembers that movie) that makes for an interesting song.

Also My Life With The Thrill Cult is a band that probably had more songs make their way into soundtracks than any other industrial/electronic group ever.

And there's RevCo (the full name can't be posted here) which was an offshoot of a couple of guys from Ministry and Front 242....

So get moving, you have a lot of bands to look up!

I hear NIN has many fans. (Thanks, Jay.)

I like Eisbrecher a lot. Just discovered them a little while back.

I love Sisters of Mercy. My friend and I used to model ourselves like them. tongue Front 242 is another favorite.

Joy Division is also cool. Ministry, Front Line Assembly, Laibach, Godhead and Nitzer Ebb are good too.

Like Patricia Morrison? I think she was the template for everyone to follow.... cool

If one veers off into the electronic branch, then all sorts of doors open as well.. Joy Division leads to New Order which leads to Revenge and Electronic..

I was browsing my iTunes for suggestions...I'm not sure what does/doesn't qualify as industrial music, but NIN is one of my favorite bands, so if you like them, you might like one or none of the following:

- The Kills..I bought a few songs off their "No Wow" album which I like, but haven't gotten into them beyound that.
- Prick ...this helped tide me over between The Downward Spiral & The Fragile
- Coil - Not my thing, but odd & industrial...and curiously not mentioned already
- Then you have the ambient/drum and bass stuff that more industrial then the dance stuff, like Aphex Twin & Plug.

Back in the early `90s, there was an industrial band named Consolidated. There were kind of like a Rage Against the Machine in industrial circles. Didn't last long though.
