A lot of people liked 'New Kids on the Block' that doesn't mean they were good! 
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that there's a wealth of great music by great artists out there, and most of it can't be found on the radio. Let's face it, Led Zeppelin had more songs than 'Whole Lotta Love' and 'Stairway to Heaven', which seems like the only two songs that the local classic rock station here plays.
EDIT: Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse of Reason is a great album, but the only mainstream song that's ever played on the radio (at least in this area), is "Learning to Fly". There are other great songs on that album, such as "Dogs of War" and "One Slip". Those songs aren't mainstream, but they're just as good, and aren't overplayed.

yeah, the problem with your argument dani, at least in regards to music, is that what becomes mainstream in the music industry is usually governed by the taste of teenage girls. i do like a lot of "mainstream" music, but a vast majority of it is awful.

Mainstream is good and bad. Doesn't matter, really. It'll still sell loads because it's the stuff that's being shoved in the face of a (largely) undiscerning public. The truly great stuff will do a little better because it will attract (as the bad stuff does) the dim majority, but it will also bring in those (a smaller set) who are able to pick out quality in the quantity. But generally, poor efforts can do well. You just have to hit a pretty low standard and you're set.

Eh, I'd say mainstream requires two things:
a.) the music is "safe"
b.) the music is well promoted.
I do get an added thrill out of finding good music on my own though. It's like an auditory treasure hunt, but really I'm just streaming music on magnatune.

Honestly, I find the whole looking down the nose at anything mainstream to be a major lol. I'm sure there's just as much crap out there that isn't mainstream. In fact, I'd wager that as a percentage there's a lot more.
