This season will mark the 50th anniversary of the old AFL.
To celebrate the originals will wear their classic uniforms.

With the new rules (see CNNSI), we're going to also include flags so that we can play flag football....

DANA POINT, Calif. (AP) -- NFL owners have passed four player safety rules for next season. One of them is the elimination of blindside helmet-to-helmet blocks.

The changes came Tuesday at the NFL meetings in California.

The new rules state that the initial force of a blindside block can't be delivered by a helmet, forearm or shoulder to an opponent's head or neck. An illegal blindside block will bring a 15-yard penalty.

Initial contact to the head of a defenseless receiver also will draw a 15-yard penalty.

On kickoffs, no blocking wedge of more than two players will be allowed. Also, the kicking team can't have more than five players bunched together pursuing an onside kick.

Twice.
One home and one away and only against another original eight team.

Seeing the Denver Broncos in anything besides orange and blue seems very wrong. Their 80s era uniforms were the best.

Makes sense to use throwback uniforms.

The original Broncos uniforms are by far the worst of the original 8. They were hand-me-downs from some semi-pro all-star team and featured yellow and brown vertically-striped socks. sick doh!

When they switched to the orange and blue unis in 1962, they destroyed all evidence of those hideous old uniforms by tossing them into a bonfire.

I like how the Chiefs original uniforms are essentially the same except they have the Texans logo instead of the Arrowhead on the helmets. Hooray for sticking with old-school style jerseys forever grin It's just too bad Lamar Hunt didn't live to see this year.

Anyway, as to the new safety rules... not sure what to think of them. The blindside blocks to the head makes sense. The receiver stuff a little less so. Just because I don't think that's really been much of a problem, er, ever. Then again, if it's not usually a problem I don't think they'll be that many flags thrown for it.

The kicking wedge limitations are... interesting. I'm not sure what to make of that at all. I bet Special Teams coaches are going crazy realizing they have to develop entirely new strategies for that and onsides. Hmm...

There's already a blow hard radio sports jock in KC complaining about Texas being on their helmet.
Some ppl have no sense of history or nostalgia.
The story about how the Chiefs moved to KC is quite interesting.
I suggest you kids look it up.

Yeah, I mean, it's a little odd having another state on your helmet from an objective standpoint, but c'mon people, history! Duh. The only thing that's kind of weird is the fact that there is actually currently a Texans team so that is a little confusing tongue But please.

now, how exactly is that supposed to make kick returners safer, precisely? i guarantee we won't see very many kickoffs that go terribly far this year. mark my words on this one, total average yardage will be horrendous and the number of returns for 50+ yrds to TD's will be down as well.

aaaaannnnnnndddddd

you guy's haven't even seen the really FUN rule yet...

Here is a little more on CNNSI in an article - HERE

Tom Brady hasn't even thrown a pass in his comeback, and he's already affected change for the 2009 NFL season. In part because of the season-ending left knee injury that Brady suffered in the Patriots' 2008 season opener against the Chiefs, the league's Competition Committee adopted a clarification of the current rule on hits to a quarterback in the knee area or below. The clarification specifically prohibits a defender on the ground who hasn't been blocked or fouled directly into the quarterback from lunging or diving at the quarterback's lower legs. Brady tore his left ACL and left MCL in the first quarter of the Patriots' 17-10 win over the Chiefs Sept. 7. As Brady stepped into a 28-yard completion to Randy Moss, Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard made a desperation dive into Brady's left knee after he had been blocked to the ground just short of Brady by running back Sammy Morris. Pollard was not flagged or fined for the hit. Under the revised rule, a play like his would be penalized, according to Titans coach Jeff Fisher and Falcons president Rich McKay, co-chairmen of the committee. "I think all the quarterbacks in this league are critical to what the game is about," said Patriots owner Robert Kraft. "It's like if Peyton Manning were gone for a season, I think the whole NFL suffers, the same way the NFL suffered with Tommy out. So whatever we can do to protect quarterbacks and to minimize the opportunity of them being taken out with a year-ending injury I would support. "It's not good for the league. What makes it special is special players. It's like going to see a great movie and the star isn't in the movie. It's the same principle."

Honestly, it's not that I want anyone to get hurt, but come on already. I mean, why not just put flags on the QB's and and when the defenders get one of the flags the play is over.

EDIT: Actually, the more I think about this, the more it pisses me off. Where was this **** when Carson Palmer had his knee tore up in pretty much the same play. No, they do this **** after pretty boy Brady gets his knee tore up. What a joke this is becoming.

Yeah, I thought that picture up there was old-school Texans. tongue Which, I guess it is...?

Confusing!

I cannot really understand what the new kicking rule is about. What exactly are we trying to "fix" here?
