Just wondering. I'm rereading Brothers at Arms at the moment (big Raistlin fan).

I read the early books, and I recall that Laurana was one of the characters I grew to like. She started out as a spoiled twit, but really pulled herself together. Also, unlike most elven princesses, she had a pretty good head on her shoulders.

She really got shafted in the D&D DragonLance modules, though. Thanks to D&D's idiotic game mechanics, she was forever stuck as a very low level fighter.

I just picked up Dragons of a Lost Star yesterday. I've read it in hardcover, but I wanted the paperback.

The Weis and Hickman Dragonlance isn't bad, though the early books fall directly into the Tolkien rip-off category, though they’re superior to most of the other Tolkien rip-off’s of the late seventies and early eighties.

That's a good way of looking at it: The Dragonlance Trilogy.

Because in my opinion, virtually everything after the first 3 - 6 books was pure crap.

I have never played the RPG.

I ahve both the Ravenloft books concerning Lord Soth, as awell as Dragonlance Warriors VI.

I really loved the books, The Dragons and The Dragons At War. The visual of all the cromatic dragons surrounding Takhisis is a favorite. Seeing the stories in these two books brought to film is a fantasy for me.

Very nice topic! happy

Yes, I'm a DL fan here. A friend of mine borrowed me a few books and got me hooked. So far I've read: the Chonicles trilogy, the Legends trilogy, 'The Last Thane' and I've read the first book Mina is in, but I can't remember the name... it's teh first in a trilogy... with the hole One God thing (don't know who he/she is and don't intend to know until I've read the other 2 books, so don't spoil pelase tongue ).

My all time DL fave character is Silvara. I just adore her... I made some fanart of the scene whe're she's bathing at the moonlight but I don't have it online. When I do, I'll post a link here. happy

EDIT: Oh! And Tasslehoff and Fizban are great too. They just crack me up. grin

I am a HUGE fan of early Dragonlance. The first six main books -- the Chronicles Trilogy and the Legends Trilogy.

Beginning with Dragons of Summer Flame it really started to go downhill...

But I consider the three twins novels (Legends) to be some of the finest fantasy work I've ever read, bar none...

I agree with you 100%. The first 6 books (Chronicles and Legends trilogies) are some of the best fantasy written. Incredibly derivative, to be sure, but definitely worth reading for the characters alone. Man, every one of the Heroes of the Lance is a favourite fantasy character of mine, and will be for a long time. It's only because I'm drunk that I'll go to the trouble of listing them for you. (Well, that, and since I don't have the books handy, this is the only way I can keep them in my heart).

Tanis Half-Elven, reluctant leader but the only one who has the trust and faith of all the Companions.

Flint Fireforge, Tanis' old dwarven friend. A hill dwarf who left his clanhome to live in the City in the Trees, Solace.

Sturm Brightblade, a man who represents everything the Solamnic Knights stand for-- humility, honour, obedience, and faithfulness.

Tasslehoff Burrfoot, a fearless kender thief and cartographer. Wait- scratch that. He's a 'borrower', not a thief.

Caramon Majere, simple and kind-hearted warrior, and faithful protector of his only brother Raistlin.

Raistlin Majere, as cursed and weak as his twin brother is kind and strong. Nevertheless, his intellignece, his magic, and his dark ambition know no bounds.

Kitiara Uth Matar / Majere, the twins' older half-sister. Her skill with a sword and lust for adventure have left a dark stain on her soul.

Riverwind, barbarian. A native of the Que-shu tribe of Abanassinia, he is distant and haunted by nightmares of his village's destruction.

Goldmoon, barbarian. Chieftain's daughter. She loves Riverwind, and bears the Blue Crystal Staff that could renew the peoples' faith in their abandonned gods.

Lauralanthalasa, elven princess. Called Laurana, she is as spoiled and petty as she is beautiful. Her love for the half-elf Tanis, and the impending danger to her homeland, will force her to grow up much sooner than most elves.

Tifa, a waitress from Solace. Though Caramon has bedded many a woman, she is the first that he has truely loved, and as such is an incurable pain in Raistlin's heart.

God, I could just go on and on about these characters. I'm seriously tempted to write out profiles for all the major side-characters and villains too, just because I miss the books so much...

I started reading the last book in the War of Souls trilogy about a month ago but someone bought the book that I was reading in the bookstore two weeks ago. I haven't been able to find a copy since.

For the sake of variety, my girlfriend let me borrow her Weiss and Hickman "Chronicles Trilogy." I finished Dragons of Winter Night...and will start Dragons of Spring Dawning once I'm caught up on my SW-reading ("Approaching Storm" is my current book)

I must say, these are some of the best characters I've read. I find something to relate with almost everyone:

Tanis: reluctant leader...being CR can be a pain

Sturm: desire to serve a noble cause, desipte the knight's recent reputation

Caramon: big, strong, dedicated to his family/brother

Flint: I'm a 6'2 dwarf...why else do I always relate to the smallest guy in the group. Hot temper, BIG hammer as a weapon, little patience for BS...I love this guy!

If memory serves:
It used to be a generic D&D world, with Greyhawk as the first 'world' for RPGers.

Later came Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Ravenloft, Dark Sun, Planescape etc.

The Dragonlance RPG was dropped but the novels continued on.
Even though Wizards of the Coast calls Greyhawk its 'default' setting, Forgotton Realms is considered by many as the 'main' world.

Many fans do like many of the Forgotten Realms novels, but It seems to me that the Dragonlance novels are appreciated more by the fans.
I have read many Realms books, I have read a few Dragonlance. I have enjoyed some of the Realms books, but many are just BAD. The Dragonlance I have read has been done very well overall.
