This displeases me greatly. I wished my parents' car was a stick shift so I can learn it. Because even when I have the money for my own car, I wouldn't be able to test drive the car I wanted. Even if I skipped the test drive, I couldn't drive it home after I bought it. To top it all off, I know a girl who can drive stick and I can't. Not good.

That is teh suck.
I suggest that you find a neighbour who has a stick car and ask him if you can try it. Or try your friends.
However, if you are like 76% of this board, you don't have friends.
Sorry, I'm not much help.

Yeah, yeah. When it's your only mode of transportation and you have a cast on your let, you're S.O.L.
But it is fun.....

Actually, I know someone who drives stick but he won't let me borrow his car. Figured I'd smash it up.
I do know what I need to do to drive a stick shift, but I just don't have anything to practice on. I wouldn't want to buy a Lotus and not be able to drive it home.
I always envision it like this: drive an auto, you only drive an auto. Drive a stick, you can drive any type of car (basically). So if I'm ever caught in a situation where I'll need to drive standard, I could do it, if I knew how!!!

Is stick really that uncommon over there (me being in europe that is)? Over here it's hard to find an automatic gear car unless you buy a new one...

I can drive stick and my girlfriend has a stik car..(I have auto)..I refuse to drife her car..I hate stick..it's fun when you're younger because it's a manly thing to do..but when you get older and have a career..you don't want to be shifting in stop and go traffic to and from work every day in and out..trust me..stick is fun for w while..when you get older..auto is the way to go

It's not uncommon, but some people like to pay extra for auto.
I'll wait until I'm old before retiring from stick shift then. That is, if I ever get to learn it.

Why would you need to drive stick shift? Automatic is easier. I dont intend to learn.

Stick is fun and it gives you more control. Guess that's the reason, right.

I know stick-shift and I'm a girl. Hell, I learned how to drive in stick-shift and if there's any advice out there, learn how to drive in an automatic. After that, stick-shift isn't too hard.
Learn stick-shift, there's no harm in knowing it. It's not too hard to learn if you can already drive. Just take a day to go practicing. (After you find a stick-shift car of course) As long as you understand what to do when, it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't either, and my family's extra car is a Mazda Miata (my father had a bit of a midlife crisis last year). It sucks greatly.
Amazing.

I'm learning how to drive right now. Our car is automatic. Stick sounds way too hard. I like automatic. But hey, I've only been driving 2 months.

My main reason for wanting to learn is so when I can buy a Lotus Elise I'll be able to drive it.
That and also because I like driving the car I have ('90 VW Golf) but I'm afraid of enjoying it too much because using auto feels like cheating.
