Nice thing about auto is you dont have to worry about your parking , aka emergency brake.
And standard for a small car , is well in a word, STUPID. you gain nothing from it, and unless you plan on driving 140+ miles a hour you wont need the extra 15-20 miles you get from driving standard.
Now, if you are going to drive a truck and haul over 2 tons, then you get your extra 'control' from a standard vs automatic.
In a small car you can get the same control as standard if you flip the car in neutral while you turn.. only time you will ever need it.

My dad has a standard 96 Honda Accord that I get to drive a lot. I love it! I think I'll steal it...

In some countries where the weather can get pretty bad (Norway) it is just about impossible to drive an auto. You have to drive a stick to get around.

I drive a 5-speed, and since 1995 I have only driven 5-speeds. I would never go back to an automatic. I hate them, and besides, I wouldn't know what to do with my left foot. It's kind of hard to explain, but I feel more in control when driving a stick, even if that control is only an illusion, since I don't drive 140 mph. (At least not since that last speeding ticket. JUST KIDDING! )
As far as learning--learning the basics takes no time at all, but then you have to practice, which is when you would need access to a car to practice on. However, most people don't bang up cars or ruin clutches when they're learning, unless they're just really horrible drivers to begin with. Some people cut off at stoplights because of letting out the clutch too quickly; others squall tires from letting it out too slowly.

I drive both, sometimes within the same day. Neither is superior to the other, it's all just dependent of the situation.
Auto
- Traffic Jam
- Cruising
- Intoxicated drving
Manual ( "Stick" )
- Draaaaaaagggg racing(Shorter distance)
- Cruising
- Power Slidesssssss
Anyhow, learning both is a good idea because it makes for a more all-rounded, experienced driver. When you get behind the wheel, just adjust accordingly.

Hehe... my dad has a 'standard', but he claims he bought it like that so that I would never drive it. So he swears that he will never teach me. Little does he know that my mom is taking me out this weekend in his truck and we are going to play hell with his transmission

MY DH taught me, but I didn't do well with him in the car, so he made me take the manual car to the store one day. I did just fine with it then, and have been driving manuals ever since. I like the fact that I'm not limited to only one type of car, that if need be, I can drive anything.
But, manuals suck when you're in traffic, my leg always gets sore. Which is why our manual transmission car is DH's, and the automatic is mine.

I learned how to drive on a 1972 VW Beetle, but haven't used a manual transmission since. Better control or no, it's a pain in the ass.

Seriously. Why would you drive a stick? It's like power-steering; why do all the work when the car does it for you.
I've only tried to drive a stick once. I had to go to the hospital one time and the only cara around was a stick. Until that time, I had never even been inside of a manual car. But I persisted. After I smelled the clutch burning I decided to call a friend to pick me up.
I drive automatics and that's the ways I likes it.

Man, you guys chock me? Are you seriously saying that you are to lazy to change gears for yourselfs? [face_shocked] Gearstick gives you a sense of control. Perhaps it's the clutch that is the problem, three pedals is one too many, right?
