I don't know anything about Star Trek. Can someone please teach me the basics of this franchise?

Seriously? I'm a longtime Trekkie who would be willing to help you convert to Trekkie-ism if you're interested. What do you want to know?

What the best movie and series? that is all a matter of opinion.
personally I like DS9, and I don't really care for any of the movies....though I have heard some pretty cool things about the new one that is coming out soon.

There isn't really a consensus among fans which of the series is best. Each one has its own following. The original series was good because it was the first TV show that tried to give a realistic picture of what space travel might be like and because it had a lot of really cool adventures and action. The Next Generation was, IMO, the best of the series because the writers used the experiences of the crew of the Enterprise-D as a soapbox to address relevant issues facing people today and to make thought-provoking shows. Deep Space Nine showed a grittier side of Star Trek, featuring a group of Starfleet officers stationed at an outpost where most of them didn't want to be along with various aliens. DS9 was also great because it had a lot of really interesting characters and the cast didn't really have any weak links. I'm not sure why Voyager was good, but there are people out there who tell me it is. Enterprise, the series that's running on TV now, is being marketed to a wider audience than the previous "geeky" series, and so it relies more on interesting stories and fantasy than hardcore sci-fi.
The best way to get into Star Trek is probably to just find the first episode of any one of the series and watch... the first episodes are always geared towards new viewers, so they will bring you up to speed on the Star Trek universe so you can watch other episodes. The movies are the same way. Some of the movies that fans like best are The Wrath of Khan, which featured the cast of the original series, and First Contact, which featured the TNG cast.

I seriously believe there has not been a movie since First Contact. I refuse to watch Insurrection, and don't consider it to be a legitimate story.

Sorry, I'm not the kind of person who takes any notice to the fact that some people think Star Trek is a geek thing or to this so called war between SW fans and trekkies.

There isn't really a war between Star Trek and Star Wars fans. I like both, and I know lots of other people who like both. We can swing both ways, see what I'm saying?

Yeah, DLM manages to reconcile the two. As for me, I like the TNG well enough, but over all it's just not my thing. I don't hate Trekkies or anything.

I was never anything more than a casual ST fan. I liked TNG, but I gave Enterprise a chance and Im not crazy about it. I dont think I'll be watching it next season.
