Well they knew of the writers strike ahead of time and had a contingency plan in place should the season have ended there, and created an episode that could stand as a finale just in case. On top of that the aimless direction of the season was well established long before the strike began. This has, frankly been a season without an arc and really the plot has been all over the place. Its evident that they no longer know what they are doing and this isn't something new. The show has been losing direction for the last couple of years.
That said I am still a fan of the series and will stay with it to the end. For all the crap they often deliver nuggets of gold that make it worth sticking around for. What makes it difficult is that the nuggets of gold are becoming more and more sparse.

Yea, I know. I really miss the story arc season like a few seasons ago when Clark had to find the three Kryptonian stones. I also think that it was better when no one but Pete knew about Clark's secret. Now it seems that a lot of people know.
And I don't like this whole retcon with Lionel's character. This season established that Lionel went to Smallville with Lex the day of the meteor shower because Lionel knew that the Traveler was coming that day.
Ok. So, the meteor shower came and then Lionel helped Jonathan with the child's adoption papers. A child that Jonathan just happened to find that day in a corn field that Lionel knew about.
Then years later, Lionel is trying to find out Clark's secret. In one episode, Lionel saw on tape Lex telling Clark that Lex knows Clark's secret. Then we see Lionel getting upset because before watching the tape of Lex and Clark, Lionel had Lex's temporary memory wiped with shock treatment.
Couldn't Lionel put two and two together and figure out from day one that Clark was the Traveler? The only answer I can think of is that Lionel knew Clark was different, but wasn't 100% sure. Lionel might have thought that Clark was just a meteor freak.
It still doesn't make sense. It would have been better not having the Lionel and The Traveler plot.

You've gotta think, though, that by now lots of people would know. I mean you can only keep a secret for so long. Ya know what I mean?

Well its official. Rosenbaum is out:
Superherohype.com posted: The "Smallville" producers, The CW, Warner Bros. Television, and Michael Rosenbaum announced Thursday that the actor will be leaving the show. First up, the statement from the former three, which also announces that Doomsday and a female antagonist will join the show for Season 8:
Joint statement from "Smallville" Executive Producers Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson; The CW Network; and Warner Bros. Television regarding Michael Rosenbaum's departure from "Smallville":
"It has been an honor and pleasure to work with Michael for the past six seasons. He is one of the best actors on television and has never failed to bring a new layer to the character of Lex Luthor in every episode. While Michael won't be a series regular and we won't have the pleasure of working with him on a weekly basis this fall, we like to think that we haven't seen the last of Lex Luthor. Stay tuned."
Details for Season 8:
Additionally, two new villains will join the cast of characters on "Smallville" this season: the legendary, unstoppable Doomsday, and a female antagonist who will challenge Clark in ways never before imagined. Casting is underway for both roles.
Doomsday: In season eight, Clark will face his ultimate challenge with the appearance of the legendary, unstoppable destroyer Doomsday, who appears on "Smallville" for the first time. As comic book fans know, Doomsday is notorious for being the only character in the DC Comics universe to have killed Superman.
Female villain: Doomsday won't be Clark's only nemesis in the upcoming season. The executive producers are tight-lipped about a new female villain they will be introducing, but they can say she will be familiar to many fans and will set her sights on Clark in ways Lex never could. Intelligent, brilliantly manipulative, and dangerously sinister, our gorgeous new villain has one more weapon in her arsenal: Her mutual attraction with Clark may prove to be as deadly as kryptonite for him.
And Rosenbaum's statement:
Dear Smallville Fans,
Well, it's been seven wonderful years. Your support is what has made Smallville so successful, and I appreciate you all more than you know.
That being said, it is time for me to start the next chapter of my life and career. I hope that I gave you some enjoyment over the years, and that you found my portrayal of Lex Luthor to be satisfying. I am truly grateful, as Smallville fans are the best fans out there. I sincerely hope that you will continue to follow my career through my hair growth period and beyond.
I'm very excited about what the future holds, but certainly, Smallville will always be a part of me. I will definitely miss the greatest crew in the world, and the wonderful cast that has been like a family to me.
Thank you Al and Miles for creating the show. Thank you writers, producers, directors and editors. Thanks Tollin, Robbins and Davola for being there for the pilot. Thank you Peter Roth for employing me for ten years. Lisa Lewis, I miss you already. John Glover, thanks for helping me feel more comfortable touching other actors, while acting. Bizarre, but helpful.
Mostly, I want to thank Greg Beeman for directing the "Oh Sherry" video, by Steve Perry, back in the 80's.
Thanks crew. Thanks fans. Thanks Smallville.
I love you all,
Michael Rosenbaum
So after losing John Schneider, Annette O'Toole, John Glover, Millar/Gough now we have to say goodbye to Rosenbaum as well. I am starting to wonder if the show has jumped the shark. I hope not.
Regardless the announcement of two new villains is interesting.

Sad, but... Doomsday! I hope that will be good! And any ideas on who this female villain is? I'm not enough of a DC fan to know. I'm a Marvel guy!

But wasn't that phantom that Clark fought in that arena sort of like Doomsday?

darth-sinister suggested in the SFF TV forum that Contessa might be the female villain.
I know little about her but d-s' post can be found here.

Isn't Contessa the person that has a daughter with Lex in the comics?

I see and she will make a great villian if she acts like her comic counterpart.

This is just me but I feel this change will be good for the show. A)It will force them to move Clark forward. B) It will help build up Lois, Jimmy, and Kara more. C) Lana and Lex have had there time. How much more do we really need of them? Lex has really gone of evil and dose not really need to be in ever Ep for us to see that. Lana also is running out of story and really I'm ready for that to end.
I look forward to finishing out this season and looking forward to what the new season will be like.

I hope it's not Robert Vaughn's character from Superman 3.
If Lex is gone, I hope that the other character they killed off two weeks ago will come back next season.
