I'm curious as to what the most common reasons are.

    Some I can think of:

"There's something about them I like"
"There's something about the Rebellion (or certain Rebels) I dislike"
"There's something about the presumed message of Star Wars I dislike"
"I want to provoke thought and reexamination of the evidence"
"I want to provoke outrage, for my own amusement."

    There's probably others.

Never found myself openly rooting for the Empire... But I did "root" for Palleon, who I liked immensely.

I like a few Imperials but not the Empire.

    Look at it this way:

Faced with the choice of democracy...

    ...or empire...

...at least with the latter you know what you're getting. :p

"There's something about them I like."

Well, they're snappy dressers, have cool-looking armor, cooler ships, and they strive to put the filthy xenos in their place have Thrawn.

"There's something about the Rebellion (or certain Rebels) I dislike"
Kyp Durron, just everything about him.

"I want to provoke outrage, for my own amusement."

No, that's why I like Mandalorians better than Jedi would be immature.

Star Destroyer aesthetics have a lot to do with, I'm with Hav in that respect.

Where the likes of Thrawn are concerned, I think it's not so much the Empire per se, as a charismatic command figure people respond to. Pellaeon is similar. In both cases they are able to, by force of personality, eclipse the more disturbing elements of the Empire. Come to think of it, Vader and Fel also fit this group.

But seriously liking the Empire outside of roleplay? Seriously arguing that a totalitarian state is ideal? That does make me feel uneasy.

Sometimes it's hard to tell when Curtis Saxton's roleplaying and when he genuinely believes it:

The battleship was carrying out a vital mission for the Emperor, transporting a seemingly unique captive being to Coruscant. This creature, known as a Teezl, had the extraordinary ability to project superluminal signals anywhere in the galaxy without reliance on the fixed hyperwave HoloNet or the expensive hyperwave transcievers mounted on large capital ships. Safe installation of the Teezl at Imperial Centre would significantly improve the coordination of the entire Imperial Starfleet.
Sadly for science, the Navy and the Teezl species, the convoy fell under a treacherous sneak attack by rebel pilots flying modified blackmarket TIE fighters. The Teezl was killed in a direct attack, and Admiral Giel's battleship suffered heavy damage in the ensuing explosion.

    Not exactly "neutral" phrasing.

That's right. Palpatine. He may be evil, but the Jedi of that era were cold, overconfident, dogmatic, and BORING. Thank you, Grandpa Palps, for getting rid of those wet rags.

Jahan Cross is pretty awesome, and while doing his duty for Empire he still has the hero conscience

    Democracy also brought us this:

I suspect Jello's would be along the lines of:

"It's not so much rooting for the Empire (except Palpatine, Dangor, and a few others) as rooting against the Rebellion (and lists every remotely dodgy act that can be tied to Rebels).

Led by someone who was technically a traitor to the Republic- by way of, among other things, giving sensitive military information, such as secret Core hyperspace routes, to the Seperatists.

The PT era: Palpatine, he is just all shades of brilliance, while his competition were just a bunch of uncaring disorganised hippies in bathrobes.

The OT era: Darth Vader nuff said

The EU: Thrawn up to a point :)

    Rulf Yage.
Because he was really for the EMPIRE, not for the Sith. Seemed like he really cared for the Empire itself.

Another example of why the NJO era just bugs me.
I can't help liking Imperials more than the "Republican" Jedi in recent years because the Imperials seem to be actually SANE and REASONABLE.

Haven't finished reading that series, but I remember seeing something about that on the wook. That being said, the Senate as a whole was never smart to begin with.
