Mara grasped Luke's father's lightsaber. Never had she felt judged by Skywalker -- Luke, even when she was spouting Palpatine-induced rhetoric spawned by the last command and what she had believed had happened over Endor. "I can't take this..." She began.

It was a symbol of his belief in her ability to start anew, to rebuild herself from the ground up, inside and out. Now, feeling newly liberated and resilient, Mara could almost believe it, herself.

"I want you to have it, Mara. It means a lot to me for you to ..."

"But it's the last tangible thing of his you have."

"All the more reason for you to have it." He smiled, almost shyly, and his blue eyes shone at her.

She found herself blushing. Mara Jade never blushed. Until now.

She smiled. "Thanks."

They made their way off the roof.

Later

Luke lay awake playing the events of earlier back in his mind. He had had the most incredible urge to kiss Mara on the rooftop. He had shrugged it off and away. He didn't doubt she could take up the cause to summarily end his life, or cause permanent harm if he touched her in such a fashion.

But gazing into those jade eyes, he had come very close indeed.

P.S. It wouldn't take more than a teensy nudge for me to turn this into a short story Drabbles are done, and I have terminal must-write-itis.

I doubt that it will end with a kiss. Such sexual tension never does. At least with normal healthy people.

She saved his life twice on Wayland. I doubt she would kill him for trying to kiss her. He may be kicked in the groin, but can't a Jedi Master use the Force to form a protective shield around his prized possessions?

Talon Karrde did not pride himself on knowing stuff that others didn't even have questions formulated on yet. If he didn't know it, it wasn't worth knowing. Ghent was instrumental frequently in digging up the little-known details in tucked-away software corners. Karrde was pleased that Mara had her equanimity back, since her return from Wayland. Periodically, she would suffer from odd moods when she was withdrawn and very snappy and edgy. He knew she had sleepless nights, but not the why. Her work never suffered, simply because she drove herself to be even more efficient. In his professional and personal concern, he had asked Ghent to peruse the data bases for Mara's relations, no matter how distant. "Traveling around with Skywalker and the Solos ... she'll run afoul of some mad, crazy Dark Jedi ... or worse." He'd said at that point. "I'd like to know if there's any one to contact if and when that happens."

When Karrde had met Mara, she'd been uncommunicative ... but he'd sensed it was strangely enough because she didn't know a lot about her past or wished to forget. It had puzzled him, but her skills were considerable enough that he'd shrugged and went with his people-sense. To be honest, many of his crew had things they'd rather not talk about.

Ghent told Karrde that he'd found something about Mara's relations on Correlia. It was a 'net site, a combination of social and ancestry database. The name was different: a Georgiana Vandrees, but the coloring of eyes and hair were too close, and when they looked at a holo of Mrs. Vandrees, her mannerisms were all Mara, even though she was old enough to be Mara's aunt or mother.

Karrde pondered how he should break the news to Mara. He decided the casual offhand approach would be best. She evinced a great deal of astonishment.

Mara decided after this next trading run she might contact this Ms. Vandrees. She felt a little apprehensive about going alone.

She toyed for a few days about asking Luke Skywalker to go with her. He was the closest thing she had to a friend, who wasn't a colleague.

She worked up the nerve and put the call through.
