Title: "Human heritage", the ancient conflict between the dark side & the light side of the Force

Author: AzureAngel2, having returned into the nursery profession & to her home country.

Co-Author and editor: @DarthUncle, far away husband, at present a face on skype & a presence dearly missed in daily life

Chief Editor: the charming, funny and brilliant @SWpants !

    Genre: Drama

    Rating: PG

Note: Please be aware that this story contains scenes of violence and self-harm, and references to abuse and trauma recovery!

Time frame: The story itself takes place during the death of Shmi Skywalker & slowly moves on to the difficult choice that Jaina Solo Fel has to make, but is played out long before even the Old Republic did exist.

Summary: Lucien, an ancestor of the Skywalker family, is with female family members when they face the final choice between life & death. He is but a Force ghost & needs to let them choose all by themselves.

Besides, he has a story of his own to tell.

Disclaimer: SW is owned by George Lucas and Lucas Lt. !!!

Notes: The number four is magical, not in the SW universe though.

My latest story about Princess Grianán, a powerful Force bender from the Tjiehenet family, had a loyal number of readers whom I would like to thank.

This time the man who won a best villain award on these boards will invite you into his mind, that is torn between love & hate, hope & fear, logic & madness, the light & the dark. He has seen it all.

You also might have met him in "Serpent-spawn" & "Wolf whelp", all fanfics to which I cannot find the links any longer. Not since these boards moved anyway.

This time, I asked myself what goes on in the head of a Darksider?!? And what about his heart? Can he love? Is he redeemable?

If you read the resent prequel "Cat litter":

    http://boards.theforce.net/threads/cat-litter-re-loaded-an-old-fanfic-in-a-new-coat.50003596/

You might know already that in the end all might be well? OR NOT?

Does one deed really bring back a soul to the light?

    Is there an eternal affliction?

Or is it the grey zones in the end?

Perhaps it is just the fact that somebody once loved & was loved in return! Here we go:

    Prologue:

Shmi Skywalker is in agonizing pain. Sweat trickles over her weary features. She convulses in her crude bonds over and over again. Her back is an open mess of flesh and blood. Her abductors almost severed the spinal cord with the whip.

When I was still alive, I used to know everything related to the art of pain. I felt its flaming embrace early in life. It should have hardened me, but instead it had made me softer. Grianán knew that; as my soul mate she always knew. Perhaps this is why I was crueler to her than I was with anybody else.

When I look back, aeons later, I can truly tell that love is a blessing. It is the only human heritage that is not loaded with negative energy.

I float closer to Shmi Skywalker, slowly so as not to startle her.

She can feel me in the Force and lifts her chin in surprise. “Whoareyou?” she mutters softly between her swollen lips. They are encrusted with blood and vomit.

“A friend,” I state and cup her cheeks in a tender gesture. “I would like to spend some time with you while we both wait for Anakin to rescue you.”

The mentioning of her son´s name enlightens the flame of hope in her hollow eyes. “Ani?” she breezes.

I nod encouragingly. “He will come for you.”

We both know that she is dying; nothing in the universe can stop that now. Not even me. I am but a ghost of the past. My healing powers are long gone. I can only help those of my blood line make the passage into the Force vortex. While not every Skywalker is able to join us, this one will. And she will be a great asset.

As for Anakin, he needs to make his own choices, just as I did in life. The future is always in motion, ready for each being’s ultimate decision. It is up to only them to choose the light or the dark. The Force itself has no sides, even though I ask myself if it has favourites.

Outside the tent, the Tusken tribe that abducted Shmi Skywalker from her husband´s farm goes about their nightly errands. From their point of view, they committed no crime. The ritual of claw and teeth is ancient. Heulwen once brought it to Tatooine while abducting my youngest daughter, Dawn.

The memory makes me shudder, but not for long.

My gentle companion here will not see another morning. But I will lend her some of my strength to set her eyes on her first-born for one last time.

“May I tell you a story?” I ask her. “It will help you think of something other than the pain.”

A weak smile appears on her lovely face.

Chapter 1: Death in the House of Love

There is only peace and order in my small universe. And my twin sister, of course. Her friendly, cheerful Force presence is undeniable. I am used to it and am pleased to have her at my side. She echoes even the tiniest of my movements. It fills me with brotherly pride that I am her mirror and that she is mine.

We are two separate individuals with separate thoughts, but we share with one another. It soothes us when we are distressed and enhances our happiness when we are already at ease.

Together, we float along in our mother's womb, free from life’s sorrows and worries. It is a time of dreams and joy.

Life is as it should be, easy and clear. There is no haste to be born. We enjoy the soft semi-darkness in which we live. The Force speaks to us continuously, coaxes the Midi-chlorians that exist in our blood stream.

Our soundless dialogues are full of warm emotions. Perhaps words will never be really necessary between us. Our bond is special. I cherish it, much more than the gifts that our father has bestowed on me. Sharing my body with Midi-chlorians is nothing compared to having a twin.

Destiny has decided that our mother should be blessed with both a son and daughter.

We are able to share emotions and slight actions, as our eyes do not work just yet. And after all, a person’s heart holds more of their true nature than anything seen. We do not know many words yet, even though they reach us from the outside world that our mother lives in. There are many other women around her. We hear their laughter. We hear their cries. And sometimes we hear their songs.

“Ô nuit, viens apporter à la terre

Le calme enchantement de ton mystère
    L ´ombre qui l ´escorte est si douce
Si doux est le concert de tes doigts chantant l´espérance
Si grand est ton pouvoir transformant tout en rêve heureux
Ô nuit, oh laisse encore à la terre

Le calme enchantement de ton mystère
L´ombre qui t´escorte est si douce
Est-il une beauté aussi belle que le rêve?
Est-il de vérité plus douce que l´espérance?”

There is so much beauty in those words.

“O night, come and bring the earth

The calm spell of your mystery
Its ushering shadow is so sweet
    So sweet
So sweet is the concert of your fingers singing hope
So great is your power changing everything into a happy dream
O night, leave the earth a little longer

The calm spell of your mystery?
Your ushering shadow is so sweet
Is there a beauty as beautiful as dream?
Is there a truth sweeter than hope?”

My sister does not care for music like I do, though she is not hostile to it. For me all those melodies have something enchanting. I hope that, in the future, I will be able to understand the lyrics. Perhaps I can even learn them by heart. I would like to be a singer of songs, too.

Our mother never sings. She is brooding and nervous, and feels trapped inside the serail. The desert calls to her. She would rather hunt through the canyons of the hamada than suffer the experience of idly resting on brocade pillows. Her frustration filters down to us. She misses the hunt, the act of killing the prey. Now and then, her hands stroke over her swelling womb, seeking contact with us and assurance that her suffering is worth it. She is no telepath, only Force sensitive. “Soon,” she assures us, “soon.”

During another occasion she whispers something else to us, “If you are a boy I will call you Luçien. That means ´light´. And if you happen to be a girl then your name will be Lisiére, ´selvedge´. The woven edge of beautiful fabric. A dream come true.”

Luçien and Lisiére. We like that. Eagerly we weave those two new words into our thoughts. My sister radiates love when I call out to her gently. Each time she uses my name, I feel glorious.

Outside our little word, the universe is humming with activity. The inhabitants of the serail serve our mother, bearing her moods silently. No matter how strange her orders are, they are obeyed. Though she is not allowed to hunt in her state, she still holds power over life and death. Lisiére is often worried about that, but I am not. Our mother would never harm us in any way. We are her flesh and blood. She is bound to us. Mothers cannot help but love their children. The Force wills it.

    Time passes.

Our bodies grow with each passing day. It tickles comfortably. Our Midi-chlorians are busily adjusting to every small change.

We are eventually able to understand that our father, Comte Alezan Ankou, married her after she was already pregnant with us. We understand that this is not the custom in this realm. According to others, all of us should be dead.

The Comte seems to be a kind and understanding man. He talks to us at times, but like my mother, he does not seem to realize that we are twins. Lisiére and I expect our birth will be a great surprise to them.

A very innocent beginning. They seem so excited to learn for the surprise that will come with their birth.

Agree with that Misty, especially after the solemn and sober prologue. And knowing something of the life Lucien will have. That title is also somewhat omnious. Looking forward to reading the rest in final form over the coming months!

While I don't blame her for the latter, I still really don't like her.

    ********************************************************************************

Lisiére notices that there are drastic changes on their way before I do. Within several heartbeats, the peace and order that I am used to vanish. Our mother's muscles contract around us. The place that hosted us for so long falls apart bit by bit. With each contraction it becomes smaller and even hostile.

    It takes a long time.

Then the breathing of our mother intensifies. Immense forces set us in unwanted motion.

Feeling the worries of my sister, I decide to go first. Whatever I will clear the path for her. Nothing will dare harm her when I am around.

I am pressed out in an explosion of blood and slime. The light hurts my eyes, even through closed lids.Strange hands grip me. There are not my mother's. I scream at the top of my tiny lungs, protesting.

“It is a boy, milady” I hear somebody say. It is the voice of a woman I have heard before.

“Bring him to me,” our mother orders. Her voice is weak, yet authority still underlines the voice thatI already know so well.

I find myself on her chest, both of usexhausted and tired from the effort of birth. The serail is colder than I expected it to be. I shiver, snuggle closer, but am not yet as warm as I had hoped. I reach out in the Force to slightly raise my body temperature. When Lisiére arrives I will do the same for her.

I feel the astonishment of the other women while they behold me, letting me know I am something special. I conclude that my sister must be also special. We are very welcome in the world outside my mother's womb. I tell Lisiére that there is nothing to be afraid of.

“A real prince of light,” our mother muses. “How you shine in the Force, Luçien. You could make angels weep with your beauty.”

I do not know what an angel is, but I get the sense that they are creatures of grace and light. It is a description that suits my sister well. I cannot wait to have her out here with me.

Fingers wander over my entire body. I can read from our mother's mind that she is counting my limbs and checks if I am really as perfect as she had hoped me to be. Patiently I suffer her investigation.

Suddenly our mother freezes in shock. Her muscles tell her that Lisiére, curious from my calls and driven by the laws of nature, is approaching.

My happiness is flawed. I pick up emotions from our mother that puzzle me. Rejection. Anger. They are directed at my sister. What has she done to deserve this? She is also perfect. There is no reason not to welcome her.

“Out!” our mother yells. “Everybody out. I want to be alone with my son.”

“Milady,” I hear the same voice from earlier on say, “We need to help you with the afterbirth.”

“Nonsense,” our mother booms. “I will manage. Send a messenger to the Brotherhood of Shadows. Tell its grand maître that their Messiah has arrived. I like to keep my promises to them. Go!”

Uncertain, the other women draw back. A door closes and the sound startles me. Something dreadful is going to happen. I send a warning to Lisiére.

Our mother stands up, ignoring the pain and agony that she is in. I wail in confusion while she starts walking. She should lie down. My sister cannot safely enter the world this way.

“Shush, Luçien!” she snaps at me. “Whatever is left inside me, I do not want it. One Force user in the family is enough. I cannot see myself raising two of you. We should be grateful that Alezan allowed my pregnancy at all.”

Our mother does something to the door. I hear a clicking sound. Not once but twice.

“You will be a single child. Be quiet.”

My cries increase. In my helplessness, I unleash my Force powers. Objects start floating around. There is no way that Lisiére can stay where she is. She needs to come out, but that equally brings her life in danger.

“Good, very good. Use your anger, my son. It is the most powerful weapon that there is.” I like my mother’s tone and words even less than her earlier advice.

My head lolls around aimlessly on something soft. To my frustration I discover that my Midi-chlorians can help me to control my Force powers, but not my muscles.

I scream while I stop Lisiére from colliding with the stone floor. I almost fail.

“Don't work against me, little fool!” my mother howls. “You do not need her. She will hold you back, distract you from your duties.”

I do not want duties. I want my sister to be safe. This is all that I want. And she is not safe. Not with our mother.

Then I hear a dreadful noise. The lively Force presence that is my sister stops existing as our minds are torn apart.

    I black out.

    ********************************************************************************

It is not my mother who holds me when I wake up from my unconsciousness, but a man. I know him.

“Luçien,” Alezan addresses me with such gentleness that my anxiety begins to fade. “I am so sorry for what happened,” he says more to himself than to me. “My household is rich enough that it could have supported the two of you. I would have liked to have twins. What was your mother thinking?”

There is nothing I can do but cry. I feel so alone and abandoned without Lisiére. There is not even an echo in the Force. She is simply gone from my side, from my life. I wish I could follow her, wherever she went.

Alezan cradles me. Through all my misery I can tell that he has experience with babies. Reading his mind, I come to know that he has many children with all his other wives. There are brothers and sisters out there for me, keen on making my acquaintance. But I want Lisiére.

“Fleur does not deserve the right to nurse you. Not after what has happened.”

I do not wish to see my mother anyway. She killed my sister for reasons I do not understand yet. Perhaps I never will understand.

“We need to find another pair of lovely breasts, to feed you,” Alezan purrs. “There is a place in the heart of this city. You will like it. It is sacred to our people.”

I am wrapped in a warm blanket and find my face pressing against a massive chest. Rough cloth rubs against my cheeks.

Alezan is confident and full of love. “It is a short walk from here, Luçien. Do not worry.”

There is screaming in the distance, coming closer. I can immediately tell that it is my mother. Her anger scares me, even though it is not directed at me but at Alezan.

“I told the guards to keep Fleur grounded, but they seem to have failed me,” he sighs. “Well, hold on, little Luçien. That hell cat will not risk harming you.”

    I whimper and wet myself.

“There is nothing to fear from her.” Alezan stroked my head reassuringly. His feelings for me are pure and true. “If Fleur wanted you dead she would have bashed your skull in as well.”

A loud noise makes me shiver with fright and then my mother is upon us, panting hard. “Where are you taking him, Alezan?”

“For a walk.” The leather gloves that hold me intensify their grip without hurting me. “I cannot wait to show my heir his realm.”

“Your heir?” my mother gets out.

    “Yes, my heir, Fleur.”

    “But your other sons....”

“Will have to live with that fact,” Alezan concludes frostily. “Luçien is a Vicomte from now on, overshadowing their claims to my heritage.”

Glee and uncertainty radiate from my mother. “Thank you, milord.”

I feel more pressure building up in Alezan. “Small and vulnerable as my son is, I do not trust anybody in this homestead with him. Not even you.”

    My mother growls softly.

A mantle of cold fury settles around Alezan. “You have forfeited the right to nurse Luçien. I cannot trust that he will not share his sister's fate.”

    “Milord, I assure you...”

Alezan does not wish to hear her complaints. With his deep, rich voice he lashes out at her. “Your word means nothing to me, Fleur. I will make you my main wife from now on, with all the rights and duties attached to it. You may even carry my family name. But do not delude yourself into thinking that there will be any more children from your womb. It is too great a risk.”

“I...” she squeaks, but it achieves nothing.

“You will be put on a ship to Amnion. There is a fertility clinic. They will take care of my wishes concerning you.”

Realisation hits my mother hard. “You cannot do this to me!”

“I can and I will. Guards!” Alezan's voice is calm with fury. The ducal guards, which had been standing silently around him, come to attention. “I want my honoured wife to be brought to the space port immediately. Sedate her if you must.”

“You monster!” my mother yells. I know she is filled with murderous thoughts.

I feel Alezan jumping backwards with me, while the guards deal with my mother. When the brutal struggle is over, he chooses to address her again. “I could have you stoned to death in the inn yard for what you did tonight, but you will live. Luçien will have his mother if he needs her later in his life. Until then, you can bathe in riches and enjoy your powers, but you will not bear any more children into this universe. That is my last word.”

My mother sobs while she is carried away.

“Not all women are this like this, little Luçien,” Alezan tells me. “I would like very much to introduce you to the honoured Minou Yeotenn. She is the mistress of the House of Healing, the high priestess of the realm.”

    Hi. I hate her.

“My household is rich enough that it could have supported the two of you. I would have liked to have twins. What was your mother thinking?”

    Psychotic thoughts, that's for sure.

“Will have to live with that fact,” Alezan concludes frostily. “Luçien is a Vicomte from now on, overshadowing their claims to my heritage.”

You'll just have to deal with that, witch. You like it too much, but Alezan has him now. Not you.

Not that I like what happens to Lucien anyway, but still....

“Not all women are this like this, little Luçien,” Alezan tells me.

That's not true. ALL women are crazy :p

Sad t lose a twin like that and also lose respect and trust we normally feel for a mother, and at such an early time in his life too. I would have hoped that he'd draw closer to Alezan and others who can teach him better things about love and humans, but I 'suspect' - unless the previous stories were told by very unreliable retellers! - that won't really happen until much closer to the end.

Okay, dear readers, before I run off to bed to cure my cold that is back again:

    ********************************************************************

Minou is nothing what I expected her to be. And certainly she is nothing like my mother. She does not have any hidden agenda with me. There is only joy when she sets eyes on me. It quickens my heartbeat.

Bonnuit, little Vicomte. I am so pleased to meet you.”

Alezan does not hesitate to hand me over to her. His hands are steady and calm while he does so, but his soul is not. He is as stricken as I am. “Fleur, she... she did something unexpected. I...” He turns away as his voice breaks. I sense that he is holding his tears back. “There was a twin...”

    “Twins?” Minou breathes.

Alezan manages only a weak movement with his head.

“You should tell me all about it over a nice cup of tea,” suggests Minou, concerned but in control of her emotions.

“I do not feel as if my soul is in the right state,” confesses Alezan.

I pick up a word from his mind that sounds weird. Sacrilege. It seems to be a forbidden act. Was killing my sister a sacrilege to my mother as well? Are there words for what I feel deep inside? I would like to scream them in my mother's face when I am older.

“I can imagine that, milord.” Minou is not affronted in the least. “Fleur always causes the worst pain to the people around her.”

I am able to understand that this woman holds an old grudge against my mother. She did many wrong things to become pregnant with my sister and me. And to win the interest of Alezan.

While his shoulders shiver, Minou takes one of her hands off of me and reaches out to him. “Let us enjoy some cups of tea unceremoniously, my sweet boy. For you and your son, I am prepared to bend the rules a bit.”

Alezan murmurs under his breath, “He is not my son. You know that better than anybody else in this city.”

He speaks out what I already know. I continue to listen, keen on knowing more about the man who was not there for Lisiére and me in our hour of need. I want to know about the man who sired me.

“Officially he is yours. When you took Fleur in, you claimed the fruit of her womb,” Minou reminds him softly.

“I do not mind calling him mine.”

Alezan gives me a warm smile that makes me happy and whole. I am wanted by somebody, even if it is not my real father.

    ********************************************************************************

After a while Minou lets go of his shoulder and readjusts me to free her hands. “The Skywalker will be happy to hear that you love his child when he returns.”

If he ever returns,” snorts Alezan. “He is like the desert nomads, always on the move. His hunger for wisdom drives him from quest to quest. You know how he is, Minou.”

“Do I really? Nobody really knows him. He remains a mystery to all of us. Like the Force itself.”

We move again. Light flickers and colours pass by my eyes in quick succession.

I try to concentrate on Minou only. Her generosity and compassion are breathtaking. There is so much light and love. I do like this woman. Her calmness fills every fibre of my being. It is almost as if the peace and order of my mother's womb have returned to me. I wish that my sister could return to me as well.

“Speaking of Dealg, where is he?” Alezan keeps his voice low. There is a deep reverence that he feels for my true father.

“He left the planet after his encounter with Fleur. Being seduced by a Lidérc female was a bit much for him,” Minou smiles, moving her fingers over the base of my skull. “Telenn told me that he wants to meditate a bit on Polaris.”

Alezan roars with unexpected laughter. “Polaris? Are you sure?”

“He is the most powerful Force user in this star system. And he is last of the old Force benders.”

“I wonder what will become of Luçien,” Alezan tells Minou. There is a hint of a question in his words.

“Oh, Luçien is it?” I feel her focus fixing on me. “What a splendid and very promising name.”

I do not mind my name, nor its meaning. What I do mind is that my sister is gone. Her loss rips me up from the inside. I should not have gone first. If I would have stayed behind she would have lived.

“I can sense much light in you, but also darkness,” says Minou thoughtfully. “There will be difficult choices for you to make. The Force itself has no side. You give it a form and a purpose throughout your life. You alone shape your destiny with each decision you make.”

When I wanted to save my sister, I did not have the required knowledge to use my Force gifts. My fear was useless, and so was my anger. I ask myself if I can ever make full use of my father's heritage. Perhaps I am not as perfect as my mother thought.

    ********************************************************************

While Alezan tells Minou en detail what happened to my sister, I fall asleep. The universe that I have been born into already stresses me. And without Lisiére it seems a sad, lonely place. In my dreams I can still feel her beside me, a reassuring Force presence. But when I wake up, she is truly gone.

    I start crying.

Minou picks me up and holds me between her breasts. My stomach grumbles and I do not understand why. Suddenly I feel hungry, and my wailing intensifies.

“Hush, Luçien. You are safe now. Nothing can harm you while I am around.”

I wish I could believe that. I want to believe in something as much as I believed in my sister. Minou seems worth believing in. Alezan seems to be trustworthy, too. He calls me ´son´, considers me his.

“I am far beyond my child bearing days, young one, but the Force and the She-Moon will help me to nurse you.”

While Minou talks, soft lights dance around us. Her breasts swell, become rounder and fuller. Then something hard is put in my mouth. I want to protest, but suddenly a wet sweetness fills me. I do not know what to make of it.

“Drink, Luçien, drink. You need to be strong. Alezan expects great things from you. Be the son that he can be proud of and all will be well. Live for your twin sister.”

I would like make Lisiére proud of me, wherever she has gone to.

“Do not be frightened,” she reassures me. “It is only milk. You need to drink it. Easy, easy now.”

I follow my instinct and suck. More and more of the delicate sweetness shoots in my mouth. If this is milk, I want more.

“You are a greedy one,” chuckles Minou, “You drink almost for two.”

That is true. Every drop that I drink I share with Lisiére, at least in my mind. From now on I will live for two, learn for two and love for two.

    FEEL BETTER!!

Minou is nothing what I expected her to be. And certainly she is nothing like my mother. She does not have any hidden agenda with me. There is only joy when she sets eyes on me.

    All children deserve that.

“Officially he is yours. When you took Fleur in, you claimed the fruit of her womb,” Minou reminds him softly.

If only it could stay that way :(

Perhaps I am not as perfect as my mother thought.

I still don't understand how a newborn can have such understanding.
Also, yeesh, no wonder why he went psycho.

From now on I will live for two, learn for two and love for two.

I call bull on his crap.

Yeah, his mother seems unstable. :(

I do remember reading somewhere that if a human offers a infant the chance to nurse over a long period of time even if there isn't any milk after a couple weeks they will produce milk for the child.

Looks like he might suffer from something similar to Anakin. Needing to protect everyone.

He is indeed quite lucent for his age. Then again, it is likely his future self that is reliving and retelling events. There are already, at least in his telling of it, foreshadowings of a dark future that contrast with his more innocent discovery of the world.

I've never seen it like that, but as an actual retelling with remembering their own thoughts at that time. As in a real-time show.

Minou is like the sun that I orbit around. Most of my days are filled with her face and breasts only. I am often silent and sullen. She never takes offence in that. I am grateful for her understanding.

“There is a time in life for everything, young one. A time for grief, a time for hate. In the end only love remains. You will see.”

Minou is not only full of wise words and plenty of milk but also stories and lullabies. They touch that sore spot in my heart, help it heal a bit.

In the House of Healing there are many females, which also makes me happy and content. Some are half-bloods like my mother. But there are also full-blooded Lidérc like Alezan. Instead of copper skin and black hair, they have a soft and dense fur. Their claws and their fangs are larger and sharper than the half-bloods. Long, elegant tails begin where their spines end.

What we all have in common though is our eyes. We can see in the dark because we are night predators. During the day, our irises retract. I discover this when Minou carries me to the market place for the first time, on my first birthday. I am not happy about the promise of celebration. My birthday is the anniversary of Lisiére's death. It is nothing to be joyful about.

My presence draws a big crowd. I feel countless beings in the Force. Some weaker, some stronger. My full name is whispered: Vicomte Luçien Ankou. Some even refer to me as ´the Messiah´ or ´the one that will bring the balance back´.

I think all those people are very wrong about me. I could not do anything to save my sister, despite my Force powers. As for balance, there is a bleakness that seizes me every so often. There is no real balance within me. Lisiére was my shadow, my reflection. And I was hers. I am only half a being without her.

Minou is begged to hold me up and bless the gathered congregation. With great reluctance, she does. She wants to placate the crowds, but she knows I do not like to be in the spotlight. It feels wrong. I prefer solitude most of the time.

The crowd cheers. I receive many blessings. People kneel or bow to me. Some even look like they are praying.

I hope that nobody prays to me. That would make me a divine being and I am just a baby boy.

It would be different if they prayed to Lisiére. Recently Minou told me a story about angels. They are beautiful beings that serve the gods. They consist of light and love. I imagine my sister to have become one of them, watching over me.

Among the crowd, I can spot my mother. I feel her presence rather clear in the Force. My sense of smell is poor, but Minou is alerted because she recognizes my mother's scent. With an imperious gesture, she summons her priestesses around her. I cannot help but feel smug. My mother understands the message and wanders off again. Over her shoulders hangs a large, recently killed animal of some kind.

“She smells like her prey,” a young priestess called Néné remarks. She is a child of six, maybe seven. “A true womb rat!”

Minou turns around to face her. Mild anger flashes through her body and mind. “Marquise Fleur Ankou is the honoured main wife of the Comte and a chasseuse. That means we owe her respect, my child. I cannot see you crawling through the hamada in pursuit of womp rats to fill our bellies. Not many women can do what Her Ladyship does.”

Néné flushes and I am sorry for her. Luckily, her twin sister is there to put an arm around her. I am jealous of the love and bond they share, though I am afraid touching others. Only with Minou do I feel safe.

“Whatever Her Ladyship did when Luçien was born, it was her decision. There are ancient rights for mothers; she chose how to execute them. It is not in our place to condemn her for it. The She-Moon will judge her in the after-life.”

Néné gives me a worried glance. “Only the nomad women kill their children when the tribe goes hungry,” she tries to reason. “They even place their young ones on a sand dune for one night to see if they can survive on their own.”

“Which they cannot,” adds Oeillet, her twin sister, quickly. “This is why they steal babies from cities like ours. They are evil Force witches, sticking to the Old Ways.”

Evil. Force. Witches. Those words stir my interest.

Minou is not pleased about the comments of the twins. “Enough of this nonsense. There are no such thing as Force witches any longer. They exist on Draconis only. No sane Lidérc woman would give herself willingly to the dark side of the Force or act out necromancy.”

Necromancy. That is another word I would like to keep in mind. What exactly does it have to do with the dark side? Can it be fought?
