CSIRO in Australia has generated supercritical steam from solar energy, which matches the temperature and pressure induced in fossil-fuel-based plants. If this is right and the process can be made cheap enough, solar energy has taken a step closer towards replacing fossil fuels: solar energy can be used to run steam turbines instead of coal or nuclear energy.

 

Changing from fossil fuels to anything else.

Step 1: Stop the "campaign contributions" from oil companies to politicians

 

Not necessarily -- particularly if the cost of solar reaches a crossover point such that it becomes cheaper to simply put up a solar array rather than pay (indirectly, via the price of coal/oil/uranium) for the source fuel, the pay of the workers who mine it, the facilities required to process it, and the transport costs of getting it to the power plant. After all, that's the main reason nuclear power plants sprung up -- because a nuclear plant onsite, even with all of the attendant risks, regulation, and supply of uranium required, still makes more economic sense than carting in metric tonne after metric tonne of coal. A solar array being able to feasibly power a turbine with the same efficacy as a nuclear or fossil fuel power plant would be close to the ultimate in vertical integration. Don't worry, if the oil companies can be persuaded this has commercial capabilities, they'll be miles ahead of the game.

 

I'm somewhat skeptical of his... skepticism. This guy absolutely needs gravity waves to not exist because he favors the cyclic model. If there are gravity waves, he's flat out wrong. I'm not saying these objections aren't valid, but I am saying I'd trust objections from other inflationists more.

 

It has already reached grid parity or better. The oil companies spend as a whole hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying against solar per year.
