I would think kryptonite would have to be an issue for Superman at some point in the new franchise. Batman is going to need something to take on Superman.

I suspect they invented the Kryptonian atmosphere plot point to avoid mentioning/introducing Kryptonite, as casual fans/movie-goers often list it as a cheap plot device.

Well, kryptonite was introduced into the Superman mythology because the voice actor for Superman went on vacation.

I think the Kryptonian atmosphere to weaken Superman in the future may be hard to pull off. Even though kryptonite is a cheap plot device, people buy into it.

Well, I think that's the whole point. Atmospheric changes are impractical. In this version, you can't weaken Superman. You beat him as is.

Ugh! I can just see it now. Batman or Luthor come up with Kryptonite in Batman V. Superman. You just watch.

    How about this:

Batman invents it, Luthor steals it. Chaos ensues. Superman wins, Luthor dies (supposedly). Superman calls Batman out over his invention. Batman refuses to apologize, says it's necessary and swears he'll keep some handy in case Superman goes all Kryptonian Victorious in the future. And everyone mopes at the end.

Sure, it's basically the "Tower of Babel" comic storyline, which was already used in a DC Animated movie, but I figure this is plausible.

Diff would be that Superman would know about it.

Or they could just do an original storyline.

I don't know..Are there any original story lines left that deal with Kryptonite? And I don't mean the decades of comic stories, but just sticking with the movies.

In Superman, Lex straight up uses it as good ole fashioned green K.
Superman 2 was the movie version of red K, and focused on supes' being normal dilemma.
Superman III had the attempt at comedy, but also the split of his 2 identities.
Superman IV never existed and I don't know what happened to it.
Superman Returns had the stolen Kryptonite and an entire island made from the stuff.
MoS didn't have Kryptonite per se, but the weakness aspect and the need to adapt to it.

Really, the only thing left is the "Kryptonite as brass knuckles" aspect for a beat down.

Would not shock me at all if Batman used Kryptonite brass knuckles in Batman V Superman.

In the Dark Knight Strikes Again, Batman had Kryptonite gloves, which isn't too far off from brass knuckles.

Superman is vulnerable to lightning and high intense electric shock, right?

No, not really. Depends on who is writing him. Miller made him much more vulnerable in the alt-universe Dark Knight Returns, because he was basically there to be Batman's punching bag. Supes was vulnerable to magic lightning in Kingdom Come because it was magic lightning.

Superman's only weaknesses are magic and mind control (same as all Kryptonians) except Superman's taken specific willpower training and is massively more resistant to telepathic control than any other Kryptonian.

There's also a theory, don't believe proven, that Superman would also be highly susceptible to "earth power" such as chi-based...

I think it really depends on the version - Darkseid complete incapacitates Superman in the finale of JLU with what appears to be a high voltage trap.

Is it Apokoliptic electricity? I'd assume that at sufficient power almost anything would at least stagger Superman, just we're normally dealing with Earth-bound power-sources. I think Hal's also staggered Supes with his energy constructs but certainly couldn't go toe-to-toe for long periods, right? And he certainly couldn't take Darkseid?

Superman probably isn't as super without his red speedos.

Red sunlight affects all Kryptonians, robbing them of their powers. The mechanics vary depending on the continuity, but that's the gist of it. Gold Kryptonite is the only one that can completely neutralize Kryptonian powers permanently which depends on the continuity in place.

More than likely meteorites will fall to Earth.

Yes and no. It was formally introduced because of that, but the concept goes back to Siegel and Shuster's run where they were going to introduce the K Metal which would weaken Superman and would result in his telling Lois that he was Clark Kent and they would become a couple from then on. The story was rejected by National, but it eventually made its way to the radio drama where it was reworked into a means of giving Bud Collyer time off.

Superman is not weak against lightning. It was used that way in "Superman: The Animated Series", "Justice League" and "Justice League Unlimited" so that Kryptonite wouldn't have to be used all the time. This would tie into the introduction of new villain Livewire, who used electricity as a weapon. But in the comics, well, here's the following.

Only magic based lightning from Captain Marvel and Black Adam can hurt him.

The nuclear bomb in "The Dark Knight Returns" was a ground zero blast which weakened Superman. Miller had already discussed what Byrne was doing with Superman in "The Man Of Steel" mini-series and how Superman wouldn't be as powerful as before and would now be a solar battery. Miller used that in his work.

It was something that would intensify physical agony, but this was the animated Superman who was vulnerable against electricity.

That reminds me of a recent issues of Superman/Wonder Woman where a nuclear power plant blew up and also weakened Superman. Which reminds me that Superman is vulnerable to microscopic attacks as demonstrated in Trinity War. Which also reminds me that Superman can be inflected as demonstrated in Superman: Doomed.

Snyder's Superman will need some kind of weakness.

Pre-Crisis, Superman could survive a nuclear blast at ground zero with no issues. Post Crisis, he said that he survived a blast once and that it was not pretty. Nuclear radiation didn't affect him as shown when Lexcorp's nuclear reactor started to meltdown in Superman #51. He even sucked in some of the radioactive water and spit it back into where the rods were, before making sure that everything was stabilized enough for proper repairs. But in terms of a full scale blast, his counterpart from "Kingdom Come" was able to survive a blast though not right against the bomb. Though he was stronger than he had been at that point due to his age and amount of solar energy.

As to microscopic attacks, it depends on what was done. I haven't read "Trinity War", but I did read "Til Death Do You Part" and "Critical Condition" where Clark was infected with a Kryptonian virus that became known as Kancer and needed to be excised from his body by Steel, Superboy and Supergirl with help from the Atom. And then there was the Pre-Crisis tale where he became infected with a Kryptonian virus and had to be helped by Swamp Thing.

And fanboys thought the X-Men movie franchise has continuity problems. :p

Let's see how Goyer and Snyder handle a weakness for Superman.

It's possible they'll have it kick in just when he needs his full power to rescue Lois...and Lois gets killed, leading to more angst.
