I'm concerned that the defunct-EU's inclusionist tendencies are going to worm their way into the new Story Group canon. I mean, I know Palpatine is one of the most important Star Wars characters and therefore exposure is inevitable, but was a first name really necessary? Especially with it being a literal one-off name-drop that served absolutely no purpose other than to seemingly say "LOOK GUYS, HE'S GOT A FIRST NAME."

Palpatine's high profile nature means the sacrifice of some of his '80s enigma, but the character really does work best when we don't know everything about him. There's a reason the OT just referred to him as "The Emperor." It's ominous, powerful, conveys a sense of grandiosity and status. Even with the publicity of his family name in the PT, the characters often referred to him as Chancellor. We don't need to become too familiar with Darth Sidious.

No, he is.... the Emperor. What more does anyone need?

Agreed. If anything, we should be thanking Lucas for omitting the name instead of mocking him for creating it.

Perhaps. But is it customary to shower before or after one takes a sheev?

When it comes down to it, Palpatine should be known like a similar Dark Lord: He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named?

Well, in that case, Jason Isaacs (The Inquisitor) already has experience being a character working for one Dark Lord. Why not another? :p

I know it's unkind, but this made me laugh so hard. And then the follow-up made me laugh even harder.

At any rate, Palpatine will always be Frank to me.

Well, let me put it this way, I will take the implied name of Cosinga over that uninspired nonsense, and I still haven't even read Darth Plagueis yet.

I just don't know what to say about this. It's very silly. I'll just have to go with hyperbole and sarcasm. Hey, it's my emergency default.

Remember all those times we've been told, "The Story Group is going to have a hand in everything now. Everything that's canonized - at least when it comes to significant characters - is going to be so much more consistently high-quality."?
Then we get this. Really, Story Group?

Upcoming: Luke's middle name is Burp. Obi-Wan is an abbreviation for Obiwanifragilisticexpialidocious. Everyone will bring up Savage Oppress at every opportunity.
None of us will be able to talk about Star Wars to non-fans again without feeling deeply embarrassed.
This was all JJ's secret plan to gain his revenge on Disney for traumatizing him as a child, and destroy Star Wars so he can go back to Star Trek and rule pop sci-fi geekdom unopposed.
That's my inane theory and I'm sticking to it. At least until the whiskey runs out.

THE EMPIRE IS VICTORIOUS ON ALL FRONTS!

*Looks at Palpatine's (canon) article on Wook*

THE EMPIRE IS VICTORIOUS ON ALL MOST FRONTS! :p

That said, I don't hate the name, but I'll admit that I chuckled at it when I saw it. At least it wasn't something like Imabaddude, or something equally as "subtle."

Well.. at least we know why Palpatine rejected it in the Plagueis novel.

I'll still refer to him as Frank.
