Weird Al's "The Saga Begins"

One of my coworkers had never heard "The Saga Begins." Had to play it for her. Laughing histerically now!

Love me some "Weird Al". His original compositions are actually better than his satire's though. Especially One More Minute.

I LOVE this song. I play it on the guitar for the kids in my family. I actually considered writing some more songs based on the other films.

 

Speaking of Weird Al, he has a new album out Tuesday.

Weird Al's longevity is astounding. Yeah, he's a very talented guy, but there are a lot of very talented guys who haven't managed to sustain pop culture relevance the way he has. His secret is being able to tap into the Zeitgeist of the moment and marry it to a hot song. Witness "White & Nerdy". "Ridin' Dirty" was a huge hit at the time, and the lyrics of "White & Nerdy" really tapped into the rise of geek culture, which was just hitting its stride.

"The Saga Begins" is another great example of this. And using "American Pie"? Inspired to say the least. The fact that it's a classic helps give it a more timeless feel than if he'd chosen a more (then) contemporary song.
